Eight Thinking Ladders: Which Rung Are You Standing On?

"The most important thing in life is not to find ways to possess material things, but to find ways to change thinking."

β€” Guide Xuefeng, New Era Human 800 Concepts, Article 42

A Question That Might Surprise You

Did you know β€” celestials look at ordinary humans and think we are "truly, hopelessly dumb"?

Just as we look at dogs and think they can't understand why their owner goes out to work every day β€” celestials look at us and think we can't understand why we spend our entire lives trapped in marriage, arguments, anxiety, and attachment to material things.

This isn't mockery. It's a difference in level. Different kinds of thinking show you completely different worlds.

Guide Xuefeng, for the very first time in human history, precisely divided the levels of thinking into eight rungs β€” clearly telling us which kind of LIFE corresponds to each level, which people have reached which level, and where you are standing now and where you can go.

Eight Steps, from the Ground to the Greatest Creator

The eight rungs, in order, are:

Material Thinking β†’ Imagery Thinking β†’ Associative Thinking β†’ Illusory Thinking β†’ Heart-Image Thinking β†’ Taiji Thinking β†’ Non-Form Thinking β†’ Hundun Thinking

The first four rungs are the familiar world. The last four are the profound and wondrous territory.

Rung 1: Material Thinking β€” Where Most People Are

Material Thinking is the most basic mode: seeing is believing, 1 is 1, 2 is 2. Birth, aging, sickness, death, eating, sleeping β€” that's all there is to life.

Thinking at this level is direct, one-sided, and linear. "Success means making money." "If I can't see it, it doesn't exist." β€” These are the typical logic patterns of Material Thinking.

Ordinary people and animals operate within Material Thinking.

Rung 2: Imagery Thinking β€” The Artist's World

Imagery Thinking can transform what is seen into concepts, symbols, melodies, and poetic meaning β€” leaping from the concrete into the abstract, walking from the material world into the spiritual world.

Beethoven composed masterpieces after going deaf because he heard a world of music in his mind richer than anything anyone else had heard. That is the power of Imagery Thinking: transcending the limitations of the physical body and entering a broader space of existence.

Rung 3: Associative Thinking β€” The Scientist's Gaze

Associative Thinking can see through surface phenomena to underlying patterns. An apple falls; Newton sees universal gravitation. The speed of light is constant; Einstein derives relativity.

This level of thinking connects the visible to the invisible and deduces cosmic laws from specific phenomena. It is scientific thinking β€” the engine of human civilization's progress.

Rung 4: Illusory Thinking β€” The Predicament of Religious Practitioners

This rung is special β€” every step looks like forward progress, but after going round and round in a great circle, you end up back where you started.

Xuefeng stated this precisely in Article 667:

The greatest characteristic of Illusory Thinking is that every step moves forward, but the end is back at the starting point; every sentence of every theory is correct and unassailable, but after going round and round in a great circle, the end is back at the starting point.

Most religious practitioners, prophets, and shamans remain at this level. Their theories are self-consistent, their logic watertight β€” but they keep circling within the same framework and never genuinely break through.

Rung 5: Heart-Image Thinking β€” The Gateway to Celestials

From here, you enter a completely different territory.

The core of Heart-Image Thinking is: the heart-mind can produce real images. What you imagine is no longer merely subjective fantasy but, in a certain sense, something that actually happens. Muhammad receiving divine revelation, shamans who can foresee the future β€” these are all related to Heart-Image Thinking.

Possessing Heart-Image Thinking allows one to understand the great Way of LIFE, to know the path to higher LIFE spaces, and to escape the bonds of time and space. Once you understand and comprehend the wonder of Heart-Image Thinking, you will cry uncontrollably and tremble with excitement.

This is a critical threshold: below Heart-Image Thinking, you can arrive through learning and training; above Heart-Image Thinking, you can truly enter only through purification of the soul and perfection of LIFE structure.

Rung 6: Taiji Thinking β€” The Sage's Realm

Taiji Thinking is the thinking of Laozi. It can see both yin and yang, find unity within opposition, and grasp the unchanging within the changing.

Using the wisdom of celestials to discern the principles of the universe, clearly seeing the goals and purpose of life and LIFE β€” that is the characteristic of Taiji Thinking.

Rung 7: Non-Form Thinking β€” The Buddha's Eyes

Sakyamuni told us: "All phenomena are illusory. If one sees all phenomena as non-phenomena, one sees the Tathagata."

Non-Form Thinking means departing from all surface appearances and seeing directly through to the essence. Transcending the material world to enter the antimatter world; observing the world with the eye of the Buddha.

Reaching Non-Form Thinking is essentially awakening to one's original nature, entering the realm of empty luminosity, and laying the groundwork for the 64 kinds of spiritual powers.

Rung 8: Hundun Thinking β€” The Greatest Creator's Thinking

This is the highest realm of thinking β€” beyond the imagination of ordinary people.

Jesus said, "Tell this mountain to move from east to west, from land into the sea, and the mountain will obey you." That is not a metaphor. That is a minor trick of Hundun Thinking. The ultimate of Hundun Thinking is creating the universe at will.

The First Four Rungs Are "Addition"; the Last Four Are "Subtraction"

Someone once asked Xuefeng: are the first four rungs practicing addition in cultivation, and the last four practicing subtraction?

Xuefeng replied: The understanding of addition and subtraction makes sense.

The first four rungs β€” Material, Imagery, Associative, Illusory β€” are accumulation of knowledge: learning more, understanding more, knowing more.

The last four rungs β€” Heart-Image, Taiji, Non-Form, Hundun β€” are what Laozi called "for the Tao, subtract daily, subtract again and again, until reaching non-action." Not reducing wisdom, but reducing attachment, reducing obstruction, reducing concealment β€” allowing LIFE's original face to reveal itself.

This perfectly aligns with the Tao Te Ching, yet Xuefeng has made it concrete as a ladder that can be climbed rung by rung.

Thinking Is Not Just a Cognitive Tool β€” It Is a Form of Spiritual Power

This is one of Xuefeng's most distinctive revelations:

Thinking is a form of spiritual power. Spiritual power is higher-level thinking information waves that bind lower-level thinking. (Article 315)

This means higher-level thinking can genuinely "bind" lower-level thinking. Divine thinking can influence human thinking; celestial thinking can transcend the Thinking Formation of humans. This is not a philosophical claim β€” it is a real energy phenomenon occurring in the universe.

Thinking Is One of the "Passports" to Heaven

In The Route Map to the Heavenly Kingdom, Xuefeng clearly drew out the complete path from the human world to the Celestial Islands Continent:

Understand the 8 kinds of thinking β†’ Ten-Thousand-Year World; understand LIFE's 8 great mysteries β†’ Elysium–Celestial Islands Continent.

So, understanding the Eight Thinking Ladders is not just "broadening one's horizons" β€” it is a direct guarantee for LIFE's ultimate destination.

Where Are You Now? Where Can You Go?

Xuefeng said:

To judge where a person comes from and where they are going, the key is to look at the state of their thinking. If a person's thinking throughout their life is roughly like that of an animal, one can conclude with certainty that after death they will reincarnate as an animal. If at the moment of death their thinking is in the state of a sage's thinking, one can conclude that they have gone to a higher LIFE space.

This is not a threat. It is the natural result of the cosmic law.

The good news is: thinking can be changed.

From conventional to unconventional thinking, from admiring material things to admiring Non-Form and Hundun β€” this is the direction of consciousness transformation from ordinary person to Chanyuan Celestial. Building the Soul Garden is the foundation; upgrading thinking is the core; every rung has its clear characteristics and pathway.

Climb upward, rung by rung β€” this is Xuefeng's invitation.
