Awakening: The Leap from Fog to Clarity¶
I. First, Let's Get Clear: Awakening Isn't a Feeling β It's a State¶
Many people imagine awakening as a sudden event β a bolt of lightning, a flash of insight, the moment everything "clicks." Lifechanyuan offers something more precise.
The Chinese word for awakening, θ§ζ (juΓ©wΓΉ), is made of two characters. θ§ (juΓ©) means to perceive β the response of your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and spiritual intuition to the world around you. ζ (wΓΉ) means to think it through and arrive at genuine understanding.
Both together equal awakening.
Perception without understanding is not awakening. Most people get stuck right there.
Profound awakening is not hard to achieve β the difficulty lies in perceiving without following through to understanding. A gentle breeze drifts past; you feel it. But how many people stop to ask why the breeze exists, why it blows, why they can feel it at all?
II. Awakening Is Not a Switch β It's a Staircase¶
Awakening is not "awakened" versus "not awakened." It's a continuous ladder from the lowest rung to the highest.
The lowest awakening is simply understanding that to stay alive, you need food, shelter, and clothing. That's a real awakening β clarity about survival.
Higher up: understanding right from wrong, knowing what you're living for, no longer drifting through life without direction.
Higher still: understanding how the universe operates β knowing that "everything moves within the Tao; simply follow the Tao in all things."
The ultimate expression:
The ultimate expression of awakening is buddhahood β or conversely, what "buddha" means is: awakened.
Every genuine moment of "I finally understand" is a step up the staircase.
III. What Does an Awakened Person Look Like?¶
There's a passage of extraordinary beauty:
A person who has awakened is a buddha β like a blazing sun, like a crescent moon, like a flower in full bloom, like a refreshing breeze, like a stream murmuring over stones, like fruit ripened to perfection, like a bird soaring in the blue sky, like a sailboat gliding serenely across a boundless emerald lake.
And a more practical description:
An awakened person thoroughly understands the myriad phenomena of the great world; knows the priorities, sequence, weights, and urgencies of life; handles any problem without obstruction and with effortless mastery; brings only joy and happiness to those around them and to the world.
In plain terms: nothing gets you stuck. Nothing tangles you up. You live with clarity, and your presence is a gift.
There's one specific test worth noting:
A truly awakened person is never lonely or isolated. If someone feels lonely and isolated, that is proof they have not yet awakened.
Do you know that feeling of being completely at ease β whether alone or in a crowd β full, calm, sufficient? That's the breath of awakening.
IV. What Does an Unawakened Life Look Like?¶
The contrast makes it vivid:
The awakened are like grain and rice; the unawakened are like weeds and chaff. The awakened are like light and fragrance; the unawakened are like darkness and stench. The awakened ascend one floor with every step; the unawakened fall into a new ditch with every step. The awakened are lanterns of light; the unawakened are tangles of confusion.
And the real cost:
A person who does not awaken cannot distinguish right from wrong, truth from falsehood, beauty from ugliness; cannot find direction forward or understand the value and purpose of life; remains forever trapped in ordinary perception, cycling through reincarnation in the lower realms, never knowing that heaven exists, never tasting the true joy of LIFE.
This isn't punishment. It's simply cause and effect: you reap what you sow.
V. Eight Awakenings: The Full Journey from Human to Celestial Being¶
Lifechanyuan maps the awakening needed to travel "from being human to becoming a celestial being" into eight specific realizations:
1. Awakening to LIFE LIFE is not your body. LIFE is a spiritual antimatter structure β ever cycling through transformation, never truly dying. You are far larger than this body.
2. Awakening to Birth and Death Birth and death are the surface, not the substance. "Wildfire cannot burn the grass out; spring wind blows it back to life." The boat reaches the far shore; you step off the boat. The body is the boat. You are the traveler.
3. Awakening to Cause and Effect Plant melons, harvest melons. Plant beans, harvest beans. Every thought you think and every action you take is planting a seed.
4. Awakening to Space The universe is not limited to what your eyes can see. There are 20 parallel worlds, 36 dimensions of space, realms of heaven and realms of suffering. The quality of LIFE you carry determines where you go.
5. Awakening to Karmic Affinity Everything is karmic connection. The relationships you form, the debts you carry, the merit you accumulate β these are the invisible coordinates of your destination.
6. Awakening to Heart-Nature Reality is the projection of consciousness. Your world reflects your heart. "Fragrant flowers draw butterflies; a purified heart draws celestial beings." The heart that clings to nothing is already home.
7. Awakening to Cosmic Arrays Power, wealth, fame, desire, emotional entanglement β these are cosmic arrays, games the universe plays. Most people are deeply caught in them. Only supreme awakening can carry you "beyond the three realms, outside the five elements."
8. Awakening to the Original Truth Everything has a source. The source is the Buddha-God. Consciousness, structure, and energy are the three fundamental elements of the universe; everything else is, as the Diamond Sutra says, "dream-stuff and illusion, like dew and lightning." Know the source β walk that path β and all eighty-four thousand dharma gates open. Miss the source, and all eighty-four thousand paths end in cliffs.
VI. How Do You Actually Awaken?¶
There's a refreshingly honest answer here: you can't do it alone.
For a person to awaken, relying solely on one's own knowledge, experience, and wisdom can never be sufficient β life is too short, time and energy too limited.
One lifetime is not enough to figure it all out from scratch. So you borrow from humanity's entire accumulated wisdom:
One must draw on the wisdom of all humanity β especially that of divine beings, buddhas, celestial beings, sages: Jesus, Shakyamuni, Laozi, Muhammad, the sages of all ages β and on the laws discovered by scientists. Only by first comprehensively absorbing and integrating this wisdom, then applying it with a Mahayana aspiration and an unwavering heart that seeks truth, can one awaken.
The best shortcut:
Board the dharma vessel created by the Buddha Shakyamuni, sail in the direction pointed by Christ Jesus, follow the route of Guide Hundun Yuanchu, and advance toward the Kingdom of the Buddha-God β the Elysium Realm.
VII. Two Mountains Block the Way¶
Mountain One: The Programs Created by Humanity
Family, ethnicity, nation, religion, political party. These aren't evil β but if they define you so completely that you can't step outside them, they've become a cage. Heaven has no customs checkpoints for nationality or denomination. Those who cannot step outside these programs cannot reach the Kingdom of Heaven.
Mountain Two: The Egypt of the Heart
Jealousy. Comparison. Complaint. Arrogance. Anger. Possessiveness. Domination. Hatred. Doctrines and dogmas. Contention. Greed. Laziness. Deliberate forcing.
These are "the Egypt of the heart" β the place where ancient Israel was enslaved. To be free, you must leave Egypt. As long as you carry these things, you're still in bondage.
Clearing the heart is the beginning of the journey.
VIII. One Final Line¶
The purpose of awakening: liberation from affliction, permanent departure from the sea of suffering, stepping out of the realm of necessity, arriving directly at the shore of freedom.
And perhaps the lightest way to put it:
The most important thing in life is joy β one day of joy is one day as a celestial being. What does joy require? An expansive outlook. Awakening.
