Imagery Thinking: Are You Someone Like Beethoven?¶
In Lifechanyuan terminology, LIFE (capitalized) refers to the ontological essence of existence β the soul/antimatter structure that persists across incarnations β while life (lowercase) refers to the experiential stage of human existence in this world.
"It can be said that the process of artistic creation is the process of Imagery Thinking β painting, composing music, drafting, photography, acting, literary creation: all of these belong to the domain of Imagery Thinking."

The First Time You Actually Used Your Mind¶
In the Eight Thinking Ladders, Material Thinking is the first rung: wind blows and you sway, cold comes and you put on a coat, hunger strikes and you find food, desire stirs and you follow it β no real mental effort required. The motto of Material Thinking is: "I have no choice but to do this."
Imagery Thinking is the second rung β and its motto is completely different: "I choose to do this."
For the first time, you deliberately engage your mind. For the first time, you step into the spiritual world. You take something that exists right in front of you β a landscape, a person, a feeling, a moment β and transform it into something that can cross time and space: a painting, a piece of music, a poem, a photograph.
That is the moment human spiritual civilization was born.
What Is Imagery Thinking?¶
In one sentence: the ability to elevate a tangible object into an image, symbol, melody, written language, gesture, expression, or sound.
Six forms β each one a different way of doing the same thing:
- Image β painting, photography, sculpture: you take something real and give it a visual form that lasts
- Symbol β maps, musical scores, blueprints: you compress a complex reality into a transferable sign
- Melody β Spring River Flowers Moonlit Night, Beethoven's symphonies: a story or feeling becomes rising and falling sound waves
- Written language β novels, poetry: words make characters "come alive" β you can almost hear them breathe
- Gesture and posture β Hua Tuo's Five Animal Frolics: the movements of animals become a qigong practice
- Expression and sound β actors on stage, vocal mimics: another person's joy and grief becomes your face and voice
All six share one principle: representing reality through form, to achieve an equivalent effect.
Why Does Imagery Thinking Mean Living More Freely?¶
Material Thinkers are locked inside the present moment β mechanically repeating the same actions day after day, unable to escape the boundaries of time and space.
Imagery Thinkers are different. They turn a fleeting moment into something permanent.
A photograph reaches across the miles to comfort someone who misses you. A piece of music outlives its composer by centuries. A novel keeps characters alive long after their world has disappeared.
Imagery, Guide Xuefeng says, transcends reality, transcends convention, transcends time and space, transcends vexation β and that is the freedom it brings.
Beethoven: The Landmark Figure¶
Each rung of the Eight Thinking Ladders has a historical landmark:
| Rung | Thinking | Landmark Figure |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Material Thinking | Ordinary people |
| 2 | Imagery Thinking | Beethoven |
| 3 | Associative Thinking | Einstein, Newton |
| 4 | Illusory Thinking | Religious practitioners |
| 5 | Heart-Image Thinking | Muhammad |
| 6 | Taiji Thinking | Laozi |
| 7 | Non-Form Thinking | Sakyamuni |
| 8 | Hundun Thinking | The Greatest Creator |
Beethoven went deaf β and still heard entire symphonies in his mind, transforming invisible sound into eternal music. That is Imagery Thinking at its height.
The Limitation: A Picture of a Steamed Bun Won't Feed You¶
Imagery Thinking is higher than Material Thinking, but it's not the top.
Guide Xuefeng used a vivid comparison: two shores of the Atlantic need to communicate β
- Material Thinker: build a ship and send a person
- Imagery Thinker: lay an undersea cable
- Associative Thinker: use radio waves
The Imagery Thinker is already far more sophisticated than the Material Thinker β but still not the most direct path.
And there's an even simpler example: when you're hungry, a steamed bun helps. A picture of a steamed bun β no matter how realistic β still cannot solve the actual problem.
Imagery transcends matter, but imagery is not the source. It cannot be the stopping point.
Good News: You Can Train This¶
The first four rungs of the Eight Thinking Ladders β Material, Imagery, Associative, Illusory Thinking β all belong to the "addition phase." They are products of the brain, and can be raised through intentional effort: learning, practice, and training.
This means you can actively cultivate Imagery Thinking. Learn to draw, learn an instrument, read literature widely, watch great films, listen to classical music β each of these is training your mind to move from mechanical material perception toward the freer, more creative spiritual level.
Civilization 3.0: Every Person Becomes an Artist¶
Guide Xuefeng offers a beautiful vision for Civilization 3.0:
In the era of Civilization 3.0, culture and art are completely liberated. No more censorship, no more control, no more commercial hijacking β every person is an artist; every song is sung for LIFE; every painting is drawn for the Greatest Creator; every dance is the soul flying freely in the air.
In the Second Home, the person who farms can be a painter; the person who cooks can be a poet; the person who sweeps the courtyard can be a dancer. In a life free from the weight of marriage and family, every person has the time and space to become their most complete self.
This is the ultimate vision for Imagery Thinking β not the gift of a few rare geniuses, but the natural flowering of every human being, waiting to be set free.
Don't Stop Here: The Climb Continues¶
Imagery Thinking is not the destination β it is one of the most beautiful landscapes along the road.
The direction for Chanyuan Celestials is to keep climbing: Heart-Image, Taiji, Non-Form, Hundun Thinking.
A practical suggestion: don't just enjoy art β ask what it points toward. What consciousness produced this music? What energy does this painting carry? What deeper truth does this image lead toward?
Turn the appreciation of imagery into an understanding of the Way behind the image. Turn emotional response to art into reverence for the Greatest Creator's beauty.
That is the first step upward from Imagery Thinking.
