Arrogance — Internal Version¶
In Lifechanyuan thought, arrogance is not an ordinary character flaw but one of the fundamental mechanisms by which LIFE moves toward decline — it is the inevitable expression of ignorance, the first gateway into demonic energy, the greatest obstacle to becoming a celestial being or Buddha, and the decisive factor determining the direction a life will ascend or descend. This entry presents six core dimensions of this concept.
I. The Nature of Arrogance — The Inevitable Expression of Ignorance¶
Arrogance is not the mark of a strong person. On the contrary, it is the inevitable result of shallow understanding. The deeper and more vast cosmic mysteries are, the more genuinely knowing people become humble; it is precisely those who have only touched the surface who are most prone to the illusion that they are remarkable. This is the most fundamental epistemological diagnosis of arrogance.
"A person is like a circle. The smaller the circle, the smaller the world outside it; the larger the circle, the larger the world outside it. That is to say, the richer a person's inner depth, the more they understand of cosmic mysteries, the more they feel their own ignorance, and the more naturally they tend toward modesty, humility, and deference. The shallower a person's inner depth, the less they know of the great world, the more ignorant they are — and the more they feel remarkable, the more easily they lose their temper, become rigid and stubborn, find fault with everything, and always believe themselves to be correct. In this way, they become ever more prone to aloofness, arrogance, and rudeness."

II. The Cosmological Root of Arrogance — The Case of the Archangel¶
The destructive power of arrogance is not merely a human-scale problem but a recorded turning point in cosmic history. The fall of the archangel provides the highest-dimensional case study: a being of original nobility became the source of the demonic path in the entire cosmos through arrogance alone. This case simultaneously reveals the universality of arrogance — in human society, the soil that breeds arrogance is fertile regardless of wealth or poverty, rank or origin.
"The cosmic archangel became the Demon King through arrogance. In the human world, people have declined and reincarnated into the carnivorous animal tier or even fallen into hell through arrogance. The majority of lives enduring the torment of fire or the piercing cold of ice are there largely because of arrogance. Only humble lives will evolve toward higher life-spaces; only modest and humble lives have the qualification to go to the Celestial Islands Continent to enjoy the beauty and eternity of LIFE."

"In human society, the soil that births and nourishes arrogant people is extremely fertile. Look at the poor person who gets a little money — immediately arrogance arises. Look at the poor scholar who becomes an official — immediately arrogance arises. Look at the person with a little wit who gains even the tiniest amount of power — they start buzzing like a mosquito. Look at the person who was self-deprecating yesterday and has a little talent — today they are famous, and immediately they feel the earth can no longer contain them."

III. The Specific Manifestations of Arrogance¶
Arrogance does not only appear in its obvious form of overbearing superiority — it permeates the subtle details of daily speech and conduct. Lifechanyuan thought provides a systematic enumeration of arrogance's manifestations within the cultivation community, covering cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions.
"The main manifestations of arrogance are: believing that without oneself the Life Oasis would not exist today; believing that one's role in the Oasis is so great that without oneself the Earth of the Oasis would stop turning; believing that one's own wisdom is already very high and that surrounding brothers and sisters are all inferior; believing that one deserves to enjoy everything in the Oasis; feeling resentment and becoming negative when the Oasis does not meet one's demands; believing oneself remarkable and therefore directing, picking at, and critiquing other brothers and sisters; believing that many brothers and sisters are inferior; developing laziness and no longer holding an active attitude toward Oasis construction; believing the Oasis owes something to oneself; being unwilling to humbly accept criticism and always believing oneself to be correct; being unwilling to do dirty or heavy physical work and always wanting to do intellectual work or become a manager or leader; constantly expecting others to look at oneself with new eyes and always wanting to display and stand out; liking to criticize, fault-find, and comment on others — and so on."

Arrogance is also visible in the details of language — word choice itself can expose an underlying arrogance:
"Lacking in cultivation and refinement, with an inner sense of self-importance, arrogance, and conceit, is absolutely harmful to one's own growth — it will only bring difficulties and even suffering."

In the contrast between practitioners and non-practitioners, arrogance is the hallmark of the non-practitioner:
Practitioner: "Sincere, modest, gentle, measured." Non-practitioner: "Cunning, deceitful, arrogant, rude, selfish, cruel."

IV. Arrogance and Demonic Energy — The First Condition for Becoming a Demon¶
Arrogance holds a special position in the Lifechanyuan framework: among the eight conditions for entering the demonic path, it is listed first. Arrogance causes a life to fall into resonance with demonic energy — no other conditions are required; arrogance alone is sufficient to initiate the descent.
"1. Arrogance: Arrogance is the optimal condition for becoming a demon. The moment a person becomes arrogant, they have aligned their frequency with the demonic — they have become a child of the demon."
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Subduing Demonic Energy, Xuefeng)
"Arrogance is incompatible with the character of Chanyuan Celestials, discordant with life in the Kingdom of the Greatest Creator. Arrogance belongs to demonic energy, not to Buddha-nature. Arrogance belongs to the weeds in the soul-garden and must be removed. Therefore, no matter how vast our learning, no matter how great our contribution to the Oasis, no matter how capable we are, we must absolutely not be arrogant."

"Arrogance is one of the devil's qualities."

"Arrogance is the symbol of myopia, shallowness, ignorance, foolishness, and barbarism. It is the watershed between immortals, Buddhas, celestials, and sages on one side, and demons, monsters, ghosts, and goblins on the other. It is one of the most important signs of an imperfect soul-garden."
(Source: Xuefeng Corpus · Mind · In the Kingdom of the Greatest Creator One Must Never Be Arrogant, Xuefeng)
Great wisdom is no immunity against arrogance — it may even act as its catalyst:
"Qiankun Grass possessed profound wisdom. After becoming a Chanyuan Celestial, his wisdom surged forth, which was gratifying. But due to arrogance, he came to believe that even the Greatest Creator was confused — this is the same nature as the archangel who, through arrogance, looked down upon the Greatest Creator and became the Demon King."

V. The Cost of Arrogance — Halted Cultivation and LIFE Demotion¶
The consequences of arrogance in Lifechanyuan thought range from the serious to the severe: at the lighter end, cultivation stops and the mission falls apart; at the heavier end, LIFE is demoted, reincarnation resumes, and the soul descends into lower life-spaces.
"Our purpose in entering the Life Oasis is not for status and fame, not for material things and beauty, not for glorifying our ancestors or leaving a lasting name — it is to perfect our consciousness, repay debts accumulated across lifetimes, accumulate treasures for the Kingdom of Heaven, and ultimately journey to the Elysium World and the Celestial Islands Continent. If arrogance arises even for a moment, we will stop advancing, make mistakes and accumulate sins, waste all that we have built, and become a stumbling block on the path of the Life Oasis's construction. In this way, the most beautiful ideals will dissolve into nothing, and we will be left with regret for all eternity."

"If one does not subdue one's own demonic energy, one will suffer greatly and fall into the lower life-spaces to endure boundless suffering."
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Subduing Demonic Energy, Xuefeng)
From the positive side, humility is the necessary condition for entering the Kingdom of Heaven — the arrogant are excluded:
"Arrogance belongs to the demonic world; only humility belongs to the world of the Kingdom of Heaven."
(Source: Xuefeng Corpus · Mind · Humility Is the Bridge to Heaven, Xuefeng)
"As an emissary of the Greatest Creator and an embodiment of immortals, Buddhas, celestials, and sages, I know deeply the importance of humility. I harvest the ripened grain into the granary of the Greatest Creator, and I know that humility is the primary mark of ripened grain. Grain that lacks humility is not ripened grain — grain lacking humility I will absolutely not bring into the granary of the Kingdom of Heaven."

VI. Subduing Arrogance — Returning to Zero and Becoming Humble¶
Arrogance can be subdued. The path is not suppressing the emotion of arrogance but fundamentally changing the orientation of the heart — from self-centeredness to centering on the Greatest Creator and the Tao.
"How does one subdue demonic energy? The answer: revere the Greatest Creator, revere LIFE, revere great nature; let the light of the Greatest Creator fill the heart; strengthen the conviction to walk the Way of the Greatest Creator; be humble in conduct and treat contribution as life's foremost duty; conduct oneself and one's affairs with openness and integrity … In this way one can subdue one's own demonic energy, walk the path of light and happiness, and ultimately attain supreme perfect enlightenment and reach the realm of supreme bliss."

"Returning to zero at every moment, always soaring through the ethereal — the realm and scenery are absolutely different. This is the best prescription for journeying toward the Kingdom of Heaven."
(Source: Xuefeng Corpus · Mind · In the Kingdom of the Greatest Creator One Must Never Be Arrogant, Xuefeng)
Humility in practice is concrete and actionable — it rests in the capacity to perceive the beauty in daily small blessings:
"A person who feels deeply happy simply because they ate enough food today, whatever that food might be — that is humility. A person who feels it is wonderful to have a house to sleep in when night falls, who can lie in bed comfortably — that is humility. A person who feels the sun shining and is grateful just because someone smiled at them today — that is humility. A person who feels overjoyed simply to be able to participate in communal life, working and playing together with others — that is humility."
(Source: Xuefeng Corpus · Mind · Humility Is the Bridge to Heaven, Xuefeng)
Even at the highest level of achievement, the requirement for humility does not change:
"May all Chanyuan Celestials of Lifechanyuan — whether silicon-based or carbon-based — learn the qualities of Qianzhou Grass and never, ever let arrogance arise in their hearts. Even when one has become a god, one must still revere the Greatest Creator, revere LIFE, revere great nature."
