Becoming a Celestial Being and a Buddha (Friendly Edition)¶
What Do You Picture When You Hear "Becoming Immortal"?¶
A mountain hermit. Years of fasting and meditation. Some spectacular physical transformation, a beam of light, a body ascending into the clouds.
In Lifechanyuan, the picture looks almost nothing like that.
Guide Xuefeng puts it in a single line:
There is no special dharma gate for becoming a celestial being or a buddha β perfect human nature, and the celestial-buddha state arises naturally.
No special technique. No extreme asceticism. No secret initiation. Just get the human part right β and the rest follows as naturally as a fruit ripening on a branch.
What Is a Celestial Being?¶
Two definitions, both surprisingly direct:
A person who has reached the state of constant joy, happiness, and freedom β that person has already become a celestial being.
The moment any person clearly understands the meaning of living, that person has already become a celestial being.
Notice what's not in those definitions: no mention of supernatural powers, divine appearance, or centuries of practice. What qualifies someone as a celestial being is a quality of life β sustained joy, freedom from anxiety β and a quality of understanding: knowing why you're alive.
As we explored in a companion discussion: these two descriptions aren't cause and effect. They're the same inner reality seen from two angles. When you genuinely understand why you're alive, the anxiety and grasping fall away on their own β and what remains is naturally joyful and free. Seeing your nature, understanding life's meaning, living in constant joy: three faces of the same light.
What Is a Buddha?¶
A buddha has no fixed mind; a buddha is the nature itself. Illuminate the mind and see the nature β see the nature and you see the buddha.
A buddha isn't an external figure or an inherited title. A buddha is what nature (ζ§, xΓ¬ng) looks like when it's fully expressed β your LIFE in its original, unobstructed state, before being distorted by ego-clinging, attachment, and accumulated habit.
The path to buddhahood is therefore not acquiring something new but removing what covers what's already there. Which is why, as the texts point out, no amount of ritual activity β chanting, prostrating, building temples β produces a buddha if it's done without seeing the nature. The activity points toward it; only the actual recognition arrives.
Celestial Being or Buddha β What's the Difference?¶
The system distinguishes them carefully:
Celestial beings β especially heavenly celestial beings β are the freest, most joyful, most fortunate LIFE in the entire universe. No responsibilities, no obligations. "Play however you like" is their defining characteristic. The Greatest Creator's beloved, dwelling in the Celestial Islands Continent of the Elysium World.
Buddhas are the most wise LIFE in the universe. Their core pursuit is the highest, most perfect awakening. They are strict with themselves, and when circumstances require it, they bear responsibility for the cosmos.
The beautiful detail: once you become a heavenly celestial being, you've reached the absolute highest limit. Once you become a buddha, there are still higher states. But the celestial being has arrived somewhere the buddha has not β a place of pure, boundless freedom where nothing is owed and nothing is required.
Two peaks, different shapes, equally unreachable by ordinary effort β and equally natural when the conditions are right.
A Three-Step Path¶
The system offers a practical, experience-based map:
Step One β Bid farewell to worry, pain, sorrow, anxiety, and fear. Live in joy, happiness, freedom, and bliss. At this point, you have already become a celestial being.
Step Two β The mind dwells nowhere, unobstructed by attachment. You flow freely with whatever comes, wandering at ease β always in a state of delight. At this point, you are already a celestial being.
Step Three β No fixed mind at all. Everything is nature; you live within the nature. Wonderfully responsive, united with the Tao, graceful and unhurried.
What's striking about Step One is how accessible it is as a starting point. Not supernatural capacity β just the genuine replacement of chronic anxiety and pain with sustained joy and freedom. That alone counts as having "become a celestial being" in this framework. The path is less about ascending to something alien and more about clearing away what blocks what's already natural.
The Big Mistake: Suffering Is Not the Way¶
Many traditional paths emphasize hardship, suppression, and renunciation. Lifechanyuan is explicit that this is the wrong direction:
Refusing to let people live in joy, happiness, freedom, and bliss β insisting instead on suffering and toil as the road to becoming a celestial being or a buddha β is inhumane.
And more fundamentally:
Buddha is nature; celestial being is also nature. Only living fully within the nature is what the Greatest Creator intended in creating LIFE.
A three-year-old child whose heart-mind hasn't yet been distorted is already in the state of a celestial being, the texts say. Becoming a celestial being isn't climbing to a foreign altitude β it's returning to the clearest, most unobstructed version of yourself.
Three Things That Must Actually Be Done¶
The accessible inner orientation above is paired with three concrete outer requirements:
-
Repay debts, sever karmic ties β Unresolved obligations from past actions and entangled relationships keep LIFE anchored to its current state. These need to be honestly addressed.
-
Give freely, accumulate merit β Not as a transaction, but as a genuine reorientation from self-centered toward contribution.
-
Perfect the antimatter structure of LIFE β The deepest layer: the quality and completeness of the LIFE-structure that will persist beyond the death of the physical body and determine which realm it can enter.
And one practical secret:
If we spend our days imagining life in the Thousand-Year World, gradually our LIFE's structure moves in that direction β and when the fruit is ripe, the day comes when we can go there.
Sustained imagination of a higher state is not wishful thinking β it's shaping the LIFE-structure in the direction of that state.
Where Do You End Up?¶
The texts describe the Kingdom of Heaven in considerable detail. Broadly:
- Thousand-Year World: A real planet 960 light-years from Earth, 10 times Earth's size β a world of complete human virtue, where LIFE endures for roughly 1,000 years
- Ten-Thousand-Year World: Further still β 35,000-year lifespans, celestial-being qualities
- Elysium World and the Celestial Islands Continent: The ultimate destination β 80 billion islands, each housing one heavenly celestial being; the Greatest Creator's private garden
Which level one reaches depends on the completeness and quality of LIFE's antimatter structure at the time of leaving the human world.
