Abstract

"Complete Independent Consciousness" (wánzhěng dúlì yìshí 完整独立意识) is a foundational concept of Lifechanyuan's cultivation philosophy, systematically expounded by Xue Feng in Strive to Cultivate Complete Independent Consciousness (Xue Feng Corpus · Inspirational Essays). The concept denotes a state in which a person's worldview, life-view, values, and cosmology accord with the Way of the Greatest Creator — and on that foundation the person can handle all affairs of the human journey with ease, without being swayed by others' consciousness. Complete Independent Consciousness is the prerequisite for Self-Coherence (the highest cultivation state) and the condition for moving from the "Kingdom of Necessity" to the "Kingdom of Freedom." Its development requires completing eight systematic courses covering cosmology, LIFE philosophy, the Dao's operating laws, spatial theory, and the nature of antimatter.

Conceptual Framework

The dual meaning of "complete" and "independent":

  • Independent: Having one's own judgment on all matters — not swayed by others' words, immediate interests, emotion, or authority; capable of making accurate independent assessments of complex phenomena.
  • Complete: The content of that independent judgment must be systematically grounded in cosmology — with worldview, life-view, values, and cosmology forming a coherent whole aligned with the Way of the Greatest Creator.

The two are inseparable. Xue Feng explicitly distinguishes Complete Independent Consciousness from mere stubbornness:

"Stubbornness, going one's own way, rigid inflexibility, and clinging to dogma are not expressions of Complete Independent Consciousness."

"Independent consciousness that lacks completeness is defective — prone to going to extremes, blind, and harmful, because it can very easily lead one to become autocratic and dictatorial."

Consequences of Its Absence

Xue Feng describes the absence of Complete Independent Consciousness across two dimensions:

Internal experience: Contradiction, conflict, indecision, worry, suffering, anxiety, sorrow.

Relational dimension: The stronger one's dependence on others, the more passive one becomes — the more one is reduced to a "slave and appendage of others' consciousness," with one's original nature (tathata) submerged.

Core analogy: "The difference between a slave and a slave-owner is that the slave has no Complete Independent Consciousness, while the slave-owner has a relatively complete and independent one." The analogy addresses not social class but the degree of self-determination in consciousness.

The Mechanism: Inner Standard and Reference System

The essence of independent consciousness is establishing a clear evaluative standard within one's consciousness:

"Independent Consciousness means having a clear standard within one's own consciousness — using this standard to make accurate, independent judgments about complex and changing phenomena, without being swayed by others' words, without being swayed by immediate interests, without being swayed by emotion, without being swayed by authority."

Four factors that must not sway judgment: words, immediate interests, emotion, authority.

Lifechanyuan's reference system: Revere the Greatest Creator. Revere LIFE. Revere nature. Walk the Way of the Greatest Creator.

The function of this reference system is analogous to navigational coordinates — maintaining orientation through "countless doctrines and theories" and "vast seas of teachings and methods," preventing disorientation when confronted with competing claims of authority and revelation.

The Eight Courses for Cultivation

Xue Feng specifies eight foundational studies required to cultivate Complete Independent Consciousness:

No. Course Content
1 Understand the origins of the cosmos, LIFE, and humanity, and the direction of their movement and change
2 Understand the value and meaning of human life, and the principles and evolutionary program of LIFE
3 Understand the Dao's characteristics and operating mechanisms, including the law of cause and effect, the law that the sum of positive and negative energy equals zero, and other cosmic laws
4 Know the main content of the Way of the Greatest Creator
5 Understand the meaning and mysteries of space, especially the twenty parallel worlds and the thirty-six-dimensional space
6 Understand what antimatter is, what belongs to the antimatter realm, the value and function of antimatter, and the antimatter world
7 Understand one's own current situation and the direction of future effort
8 Survey human society from above, understanding its operating mechanisms and their advantages and disadvantages

The eight courses operate at three levels: cosmological (1, 3, 4, 5, 6), existential-personal (2, 7), and socio-analytical (8). Incomplete coverage of any level produces consciousness that is independent but not complete.

Relationship to Self-Coherence

Complete Independent Consciousness and Self-Coherence form a sequential progression within Lifechanyuan's cultivation path:

"Self-Coherence is the supreme state of cultivation. To reach Self-Coherence, one must have Complete Independent Consciousness. When one's own consciousness is no longer influenced or swayed by the consciousness of one's peers, one achieves Self-Coherence in consciousness — that is tathata, the original nature realized — and the most magnificent curtain of LIFE opens."

Progression: Cultivate Complete Independent Consciousness → consciousness no longer swayed by others → achieve Self-Coherence → return to original nature (tathata)

Position in the Chanyuan Celestial Cultivation System

Eight Tasks Every Chanyuan Celestial Must Complete places cultivating independent consciousness as the seventh mandatory task, manifesting as:

"Having one's own judgment on all matters; having one's own independent views; no longer following the crowd; no longer worshipping authority; no longer bound by any mental or doctrinal constraint. Chanyuan Celestials no longer cry injustice, no longer claim to have been deceived, no longer blame heaven, society, or other people — because Chanyuan Celestials possess independent consciousness."

Ultimate Orientation: Kingdom of Freedom

The social-philosophical meaning of Complete Independent Consciousness is captured in the transition from the "Kingdom of Necessity" — life determined by others' consciousness — to the "Kingdom of Freedom," in which one's inner standard is the sole determinant of judgment and action.

At the endpoint of this cultivation, the relationship between Chanyuan Celestials and the Guide (Xue Feng) transforms from a teacher-student structure into one of mutual equality and independence:

"Every Chanyuan Celestial who has fully understood the content of Lifechanyuan now stands at the peak of human wisdom. No one can guide you anymore… Even I, the Guide, will no longer influence or sway your consciousness, because we have gradually become the same — resonating at the same frequency, in harmony — the problem of mutual influence no longer exists. This is precisely why I have always emphasized that I am only a guide, not everyone's teacher or humanity's savior — because ultimately we are equal, and mutually independent."
