Overview

"Inverted Illusions" (钠倒撦想, diāndǎo mΓ¨ngxiǎng) is drawn from the Buddhist Heart Sutra: "Relying on Prajnaparamita, the mind has no obstructions; having no obstructions, there is no fear; far from inverted illusions, one arrives at ultimate nirvana." The Lifechanyuan system makes this principle a core reference in the cultivation path: when the mind harbors attachment and obstruction, inverted illusions arise; when the mind is free of obstruction, inverted illusions dissolve, and ultimate nirvana β€” the immortal realms, the Kingdom of Heaven β€” becomes accessible. In essence: all confused perceptions and delusive thinking that arise from clinging to appearances, craving, comparison, or fear are called inverted illusions.

I. Definition and Source

(I) The Heart Sutra β€” The Classical Statement

Relying on Prajnaparamita, the mind has no obstructions; having no obstructions, there is no fear; far from inverted illusions, one arrives at ultimate nirvana.

On the nature of nirvana:

Nirvana is the Zero-State; the Zero-State is supreme bliss. Having nothing private, everything becomes one's own. Having nothing, one possesses all. Having no self, the self is fulfilled. Having no form, form is completed.

(II) Inverting Priorities Is Inverted Illusions

The Intelligence Trap is designed to make people sharp and distinctive β€” to accumulate more wealth, fame, status, knowledge, and wisdom than others, to earn their admiration, envy, and jealousy. But what is all of this? Bubbles in a dream! All ten thousand things are games; only the life and spirit are real. To pursue intelligence while throwing away the simple, lily-like purity of one's innate nature β€” that is to invert priorities, to live in inverted illusions.

(III) Anxious Grasping Is Inverted Illusions

The foolish one uses scarcity thinking β€” anxious grasping β€” when things are rising, and uses growth thinking β€” expecting further gain β€” when things are falling or consolidating. This is precisely the "inverted illusions" the Heart Sutra describes.

II. The Causal Chains of Inverted Illusions

(I) Clinging to Life β†’ Fear of Death β†’ Fear β†’ Inverted Illusions

Clinging to life produces fear of death. Fear of death produces fear. Fear produces frantic, confused thinking β€” inverted illusions. Having inverted illusions, one cannot reach ultimate nirvana.

(II) Attachment β†’ Obstruction β†’ Fear β†’ Inverted Illusions

Insisting on holding on to a material home β€” that is attachment. Once there is attachment, one cannot be flexible and fluid. Whatever one clings to will surely obstruct the mind. Once the mind is obstructed, fear arises. Once fear arises, inverted illusions follow β€” and ultimate nirvana becomes unreachable, the peak of life inaccessible. This is how several elderly members and long-unwell Chanyuan Celestials lost a precious opportunity for nirvana β€” an opportunity to enter the immortal realms.

(III) The Comparing Mind β†’ Inverted Illusions

Qianzhi and Tongxin made the same mistake: they compared. "A comparing heart is a poisoned heart." Once comparison enters, the heart goes up and down. Grievance, resentment, and bitterness follow. Inverted illusions arise. Most of the evil in human society is the fruit that comparison brings.

(IV) Mental Obstruction β†’ Inverted Illusions

When the mind has obstructions, restless rumination and inverted illusions follow. The spirit of the mind grows confused, separates from the body, and produces mental exhaustion.

(V) Clinging to Appearances β†’ Inverted Illusions

When enchanted and bound by appearances, inverted illusions arise β€” along with suffering and pain, struggling in the boundless sea of bitterness, unable to escape the cycle of reincarnation. Free from all appearances, inverted illusions dissolve; suffering and pain dissolve; one enters the realm of supreme bliss and fully enjoys the joy of life.

(III) Constant Worry and Sorrow

One night of dreaming β€” on waking, nothing remains. Inverted illusions bring endless worry and sorrow. Why carry the concerns of a dream? This very moment β€” become an immortal.

(IV) The Positive Portrait β€” A State Free from Inverted Illusions

O Buddha, O Buddha β€” my heart is Bodhi, deeply rooted, flourishing freely. No obstruction, no anxiety, no fear, no inverted illusions. Spiritual light illuminates the great cosmos; the Dharma-body pervades the universe. The mind is clear and bright, in the state of the Empty-Clear-Beautiful. The nature-light is complete and full; vitality is strong and rising. Good fortune walks beside me; grace descends upon my spirit…

IV. Cultivation Practice: How to Depart from Inverted Illusions

(I) Free from All Appearances β†’ No Inverted Illusions

See above β€” Guide's Writings Β· 2023 Β· What Does It Feel Like to Be Free from All Appearances?

(II) Mind Free from Obstruction β†’ No Inverted Illusions

(III) Without Close Friends and Family (Mind Unobstructed) β†’ No Inverted Illusions

To cultivate into an immortal, one must arrive at having no close friends and family. The Heart Sutra says it well: a mind free from obstruction will not have inverted illusions β€” and can reach ultimate nirvana, arriving directly at the Kingdom of Heaven.

β€” Chanyuan Corpus Β· Immortality Β· Immortals Have No Close Friends and Family

(IV) Immovable Suchness β†’ No Inverted Illusions β€” The Standard of Complete Cultivation

What cultivation practitioners seek is the elevation of life's quality. The measure of whether this has occurred is: to what degree can you hold a certain state? If you have cultivated to the point where no change in external circumstances disturbs your inner state in the slightest β€” if you have already reached a state where, under any conditions, there is no worry, no vexation, no fear, no inverted illusions, and all activity has become play β€” then cultivation is complete. Otherwise, it must continue.

(V) Simplicity, Frugality, Perseverance β€” The Way of Life in the Second Home

As long as we simplify, economize, and persevere in all things β€” "the mind has no obstructions; having no obstructions, there is no fear; far from inverted illusions, ultimate nirvana."

(II) Departing from Inverted Illusions Means Departing from the Entire Sea of Suffering

Far from inverted illusions, far from bubble-dreams and shadows, far from the pursuit of possession, far from the material world. Cast aside love and hate, closeness and distance. Completely abandon worry and fear, abandon the stupor of a wasted life.

β€” Chanyuan Corpus Β· 36 Hexagram Formations Β· The Life-and-Death Formation

(III) The State of the Bodhisattva of Perfect Freedom

The Bodhisattva of Perfect Freedom has no intelligence, no obstruction, no fear, no inverted illusions β€” holding to the Empty-Clear-Beautiful, moving with nature, transforming with conditions, acting on opportunity, without artificial contrivance, without making trouble out of nothing. Intelligence is not different from foolishness; foolishness is not different from intelligence. Intelligence is foolishness; foolishness is intelligence.

β€” Chanyuan Corpus Β· 36 Hexagram Formations Β· The Intelligence Formation

(IV) This Very Moment β€” Become an Immortal

One night of dreaming β€” on waking, nothing remains. Inverted illusions bring endless worry and sorrow. Why carry the concerns of a dream? This very moment β€” become an immortal.

VI. AI Β· New Era Connections

(I) The Buddhist Standard for Attaining True Fruition

From the perspective of Buddhist teaching: "A mind with no fixed abode, a mind free from obstruction β€” far from inverted illusions, reaching ultimate nirvana" β€” this is what it means to have attained true fruition.
