Fixed-Pattern Thinking: Your Mind May Be Locked Up by Three Locks¶
"Fixed-pattern thinking is the greatest obstacle to the advance of human civilization."
β Eight Hundred Concepts for the New Era of Humanity, Concept 231
In Lifechanyuan terminology, LIFE (capitalized) refers to the ontological essence of existence β the soul/antimatter structure that persists across incarnations β while life (lowercase) refers to the experiential stage of human existence in this world.
Take a Quick Test¶
- When you see "1+1," what is your immediate reaction? (= 2)
- When you hear "marriage," what is your first thought? (The natural destination for a happy life)
- When someone presents a completely overturning, brand-new idea, what is your first feeling? (Resistance)
If all of the above are "yes" β congratulations. You are like 99% of people: you have fixed-pattern thinking.
This is not calling you stupid. It is a natural flaw of the human brain.
What Is Fixed-Pattern Thinking?¶
Fixed-pattern thinking is thinking that has solidified into a mold β unconsciously refusing new ideas, new methods, and new concepts, and operating only according to existing patterns.
The most frightening thing is: you cannot feel it working.
"Every person's mind is covered by an invisible web of thought; every person carries a heavy cross on their back β they simply cannot feel it, or they can feel it but lack the strength and courage to break free from its constraints." (Concept 668)
The Three Locks: Habit, Knowledge, History¶
How does fixed-pattern thinking form? There are three locks:
π Habit¶
"It has always been this way" β so the mind never engages. Even when there is no way forward, people simply resign themselves to fate.
π Knowledge¶
Einstein said: "The greatest resistance I have encountered came from my education." The more knowledge one accumulates, the more one applies old frameworks to everything, never asking whether another possibility exists. The so-called "bookworm" is someone who has learned a lot but cannot think flexibly.
π History¶
The longer the history, the less creative a people tends to be. "Tradition" is history dressed up: following tradition carries no risk; breaking tradition carries heavy risk. People naturally take the safe path.
These three locks stack on top of each other and lock people in completely.
Do Not Look Left and Right β This Person May Be You¶
Xuefeng says:
"Do not think that these people are experts, scholars, or officials. That person is precisely you β the ordinary person.
When a person refuses to accept new ideas, new thinking, new methods, and new concepts, that person's thinking has already formed a fixed pattern. Once thinking forms a fixed pattern, that person has become a force of resistance against civilizational progress.
When we think we are right, we are already wrong."
This is not a criticism of others. It is a self-examination for every one of us.
The Cost: Being Left Behind by History¶
"The tide of the times surges forward. People constrained by mental inertia have been left behind by the times β¦ those who remained most heavily influenced by old thinking felt strong resistance, psychological imbalance β some spent all day grumbling; others began to steal and corrupt." (The Harm of Mental Inertia)
"Kodak had no choice but to exit history. Horse-carts could only enter museums." (Concept 679)
Every major turning point in history leaves behind those with fixed-pattern thinking.
How to Break It: The Empty-Cup Mindset¶
If a cup is full, nothing new can be poured in.
"Only by emptying out one's 'cup' can one fill it with something else."
Nature demonstrates this perfectly: the willow tree lets every leaf fall in autumn, bare through winter β so that in spring it can bud anew, putting on tender green, full of life. To stop renewing means aging and death; to cling to the old means heading toward decay and ruin.
On a great tree, the most verdant parts are the fresh new branches β not the ones that have grown for years.
The solution is simple but not easy: - Change habits β do not take "it has always been this way" for granted - Step outside knowledge β ask whether there is another possibility - Let go of history β tradition is a reference, not a prison - Return to zero β "Return to zero at any time. Do not rely on position, do not rely on past merit, do not rely on the past." (Concept 165)
The Most Important Thing in Life¶
"The most important thing in life is not to find ways to possess material things β it is to find ways to change one's thinking." (Concept 42)
