Upbringing · Self-Cultivation · Composure · Internal Version

This version is for practitioners and researchers. It collects complete source quotations organized in a six-section logical framework, with citations.

Entry Overview

Upbringing is the civilized courtesy and etiquette learned from family, school, and society. Self-Cultivation is the refined manner of treating others — cultivated through the depth of one's knowledge, arts, and thought. Composure is the ability to govern one's emotions, rooted in profound moral character. The three form a layered progression: lack of Upbringing invites contempt; lack of Self-Cultivation invites disdain; lack of Composure causes others to keep their distance while maintaining outward respect. In the Lifechanyuan system, belief and ideals determine these three qualities, which shape one's inner world, which shapes words and actions, which determine life's outcomes. They are a required course of human life and one of the 24 hard qualifications for the Kingdom of Heaven.

I. Core Definitions and Distinctions

Upbringing is the civilized courtesy learned from family, school, and society. Self-Cultivation is the refined manner of treating others — cultivated through the depth of one's theoretical knowledge, arts, and thought. Composure is the ability to govern one's emotions, rooted in profound moral character.

II. The Three-Quality Causal Chain — Belief Determines Life's Path

Each person's today is absolutely accumulated from their past words, actions, and conduct. Each person's words, actions, and conduct are absolutely determined by their inner world. Each person's inner world is absolutely determined by their upbringing, self-cultivation, and composure. Each person's upbringing, self-cultivation, and composure are absolutely determined by their beliefs and ideals. From this we conclude: the path of one's life is determined by one's beliefs and ideals.

III. The Four Levels of Self-Cultivation and the 18 Standards

Self-Cultivation is the comprehensive expression of one's level of Self-Refinement (修为). Self-Refinement is the depth and breadth of one's Practice (修行). Practice is the conscious outward expression of one's Cultivation Work (修炼). Cultivation Work is the concentration of heart-mind in one who holds a Mahayana aspiration.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart-Mind Chapter · The Self-Cultivation Chanyuan Celestials Should Possess)

Chanyuan Celestials must meet the following 18 standards — meeting them means being a person of Self-Cultivation; failing them means lacking it. Doors — any door — must be opened and closed gently. Always knock gently before entering. If you enter, do so openly and directly — do not sneak in. When leaving, close the door gently behind you, as naturally as turning off a light. When speaking, keep your tone low — just loud enough for the other person to hear clearly; never shout or speak loudly. In conversation, keep your tone calm; speak only of facts and your own feelings; regarding how others evaluate things, do not argue, quarrel, debate, or dispute. Learn to listen; do not interrupt or cut off others. Offer suggestions, not decisions. Do not make yourself the center of conversation or steer topics toward yourself. Never say another person is wrong. Never pass judgment on any person or any matter. Never insult, belittle, attack, or harm anyone — instead, respect everyone. After using washrooms, bathrooms, or any shared facilities, clean up and leave them in the best condition for the next person. In public spaces, always dress cleanly, neatly, and appropriately. Walk, sit, and carry yourself with grace; speak at a calm, unhurried pace; neither fawn nor condescend before virtuous people; let your manner carry the bearing of a celestial being. Always consider others first; place yourself second. Let your eyes carry light, your heart carry love; let kindness be the root of every thought; apply diligence to daily affairs. Give full effort to everything; pursue excellence. Honor the divine, respect ancestors; be gracious in all directions; transform the world with natural affinity. Never forget your original aspiration — the divine is three feet above your head; hold to your purpose through life and reach the celestial realm.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart-Mind Chapter · The Self-Cultivation Chanyuan Celestials Should Possess)

The content of Self-Cultivation is far broader than these 18 items — they do not cover everything. But if one can meet these 18, one can at least be called a person of Self-Cultivation. When people genuinely like you from within, it proves you have Self-Cultivation; when people genuinely dislike you from within, it is because you lack it.

IV. The Core Sign of Composure — Governing Emotions · Open-Minded Acceptance

A person who cannot control their own emotions has no Composure.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart-Mind Chapter · Going to the Life Oasis Requires Not Only Upbringing and Self-Cultivation but Also Composure)

In our community's recent turbulence, I saw that most brothers and sisters have Composure — shown primarily in their ability to accept others' identification of their shortcomings with calm and gratitude. If someone identifies your shortcomings and you not only refuse to accept it but resist and argue, that is a serious lack of Composure. Even if what they say about you is factually incorrect, if you argue, resist, shout, or spread complaints, that shows no Composure. But if you remain open and accepting — expressing genuine gratitude even while being misunderstood — that is deep Composure.

Where do the real gaps between people lie? What appears to be a wealth gap is actually a gap in merit and blessing. What appears to be a social-connections gap is actually a character gap. What appears to be a poise gap is actually a Composure gap. What appears to be a beauty gap is actually a heart-mind gap. On the surface, people look similar; inside, their spiritual levels are vastly different.

The more capable a person is, the less temper they have — because quality, refinement, composure, learning, and ability combine into the full character of a person.

V. The Three Qualities and Social Standing — Great Persons, Small Persons, Kingdom of Heaven

In getting along with others, great persons yield to small persons. What is a great person? One with vast perspective, elevated spiritual level, upbringing, self-cultivation, and composure — one with deep attainment who understands human principles. What is a small person? One who is narrow-minded, shortsighted, petty, quick to take offense, lacking in upbringing, self-cultivation, and composure — one who fails to understand principles.

Celestial beings and Buddhas always yield the way to others; they never argue with anyone. Whoever argues is definitely not a celestial being or Buddha — they are an ordinary person, perhaps even a worldly one. Whoever yields the way is surely a sage, a celestial being, or a Buddha.

Hard qualification No. 22: having self-cultivation, upbringing, and composure.

Only deep water can carry a ship; only a person with composure will be respected and accompanied by others.

VI. Cultivation Direction — Authenticity as Foundation, the Three Qualities as Lifelong Work

Children cry when sad and call out when hungry. Adults do not — they say things like "real men don't cry" and "be refined." Why? Because children are authentic; adults are false.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom Chapter · The First Step of Returning to Childhood)

Establish a Mahayana aspiration; emulate the sages of all ages. Do not think too highly of yourself; do not lose your temper; do not bully honest people; do not mock others; do not press your advantage when you are right; do not make careless promises; do not impose your will on others; do not cry or make a scene; do not speak carelessly; do not close yourself off; do not ask others for things lightly; do not make unreasonable demands; do not casually interrupt others; do not lecture others at the drop of a hat; let your conduct not be outrageous, your behavior not be perverse, your appearance not be slovenly, your words not wound others.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart-Mind Chapter · Going to the Life Oasis Requires Not Only Upbringing and Self-Cultivation but Also Composure)

The future Life Oasis will be different from the former Second Home — those who lack upbringing, self-cultivation, and composure will not be able to stay. Please, everyone, make the effort.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart-Mind Chapter · Going to the Life Oasis Requires Not Only Upbringing and Self-Cultivation but Also Composure)

The elimination mechanism is always at work — across every era, every field, whether through reincarnation or the pursuit of survival. Those who remain and rise are LIFE with self-cultivation; those who are eliminated and fall are LIFE that lacks it.
