Inner Spirit (Overview) — Friendly Version¶
Have You Ever Felt This?¶
You walk into a room, and you immediately feel warm, at ease around some people. Others you meet seem perfectly pleasant on the surface — but something about being near them feels draining.
That's not imagination. What you're picking up on is the state of their inner Spirit.
What Is the Inner Spirit?¶
We use the word all the time — "a beautiful soul," "a tormented psyche," "inner peace." But what exactly is the inner Spirit made of?
In the Lifechanyuan system, the inner Spirit (心灵, xīn líng) is the union of two things:
- Heart (心, xīn): like a mirror, reflecting everything in the universe around it. When the surface of a lake is still, the reflection is clear; when a storm churns the water, the reflection shatters. Most people's Hearts work the same way — arising with circumstances, disappearing with them.
- Spirit-Force (灵, líng): the consciousness of the Greatest Creator, the very source of LIFE, permeating all time and space.
Together they form the inner Spirit.
Here's a vivid analogy: the Spirit-Force is like a great radio transmitter, broadcasting divine signals into every corner of the universe at all times; the Heart is like a small receiver, capable of picking up those signals. But if the receiver rusts over — if the Heart becomes polluted — the signal can't get through.
Inner Spirit vs. Spirit — What's the Difference?¶
In everyday life, we often mix up the two. Lifechanyuan draws a clear line:
| Inner Spirit | Spirit | |
|---|---|---|
| Belongs to | Realm of consciousness | Realm of energy |
| How we describe it | Beautiful / ugly / rich / dull inner Spirit | Vigorous / listless / full of spirit |
| Which is the foundation | The root | Vitality growing from the root |
"The inner Spirit is the root; the Spirit is a kind of vitality that grows from the root. The quality of the inner Spirit determines the quality of the Spirit."
Think of it this way: you can have tremendous energy and enthusiasm, but if your inner values, perceptions, and inner state are corrupted at the root, all that energy just amplifies the damage.
The Most Important Wealth in Life¶
Lifechanyuan teaches that there are three kinds of wealth: inner-Spirit wealth, spiritual wealth, and material wealth.
The order matters:
"One must first pursue inner-Spirit wealth, then spiritual wealth, and finally material wealth. The three forms of wealth are indispensable."
— New Era Human 800 Concepts, Concept 27
Why does inner Spirit come first?
"Without inner-Spirit wealth, a person is like a tree without roots, water without a source — a wandering ghost, a walking corpse."
You can pile up material possessions for a lifetime. Without inner-Spirit wealth, the emptiness doesn't go away.
And the simplest test for whether someone's inner Spirit is truly rich?
"A person who can bring joy to others is a person rich in inner Spirit." — Concept 776
The Soul Garden: Your Inner World Is a Garden You Can Tend¶
The inner Spirit isn't a fixed trait you're born with. It's more like a garden.
"A person's behavior is determined by their consciousness; consciousness is the Soul Garden; the contents of one's consciousness determine whether the Soul Garden is beautiful or ugly."
And the stakes couldn't be higher:
"A person's Soul Garden is the foundation upon which that person achieves whatever form of LIFE. A perfect Soul Garden enables one to become a celestial or a Buddha; an ugly Soul Garden leads one to become a ghost or a demon."
So what goes in the garden?
Weeds to pull out: jealousy, selfishness, anger, hatred, complaint, anxiety, fear, greed, hypocrisy…
Flowers to plant: Truth, Goodness, Beauty, Love, Faith, Sincerity, tolerance, compassion, courage, selflessness…
Every choice you make, every thought you entertain, every habit you cultivate — you're either tending the garden or letting it go to weeds.
The Biggest Obstacle: "The Egypt of the Inner Spirit"¶
There is a second mountain blocking the path to Heaven (the first being family, national, religious, and political programming). It's called "the Egypt of the inner Spirit":
Jealousy. Comparison. Resentment. Arrogance. Possessiveness. Hatred. Dogma. Contention. Greed. Laziness.
"Without clearing these impurities from the inner Spirit, one cannot reach the Kingdom of Heaven." — Concept 489
"The uglier the inner Spirit, the more suffering; the more beautiful the inner Spirit, the more beautiful the future." — Concept 32
Three Worlds: Which One Are You Living In?¶
Lifechanyuan describes three levels of existence:
| World | Who Lives Here |
|---|---|
| Material world | Animals — driven by instinct: food, shelter, survival |
| Spiritual world | Ordinary humans — seeking pleasure, freedom, happiness |
| Inner-Spirit world | Celestials, Buddhas, angels — living for bliss, selfless dedication, transcendence |
"A LIFE that lives its entire existence in joy, bliss, ease, and transcendence lives in the inner-Spirit world, and is destined for a comedy."
"The highest wisdom revels in the inner-Spirit world." — Concept 79
Most of us start in the spiritual world. The path forward is to cultivate the inner Spirit until it can sustain life at the highest level.
The Highest Destination: When the Heart Holds Nothing¶
What does complete inner Spirit mastery look like?
"No attachment in Heart, no hindrance in Heart — going along with conditions, free and at ease, moving naturally and without constraint." — Concept 464
"All phenomena arise from the inner Spirit; the inner Spirit transcends all phenomena. … When flowers are fragrant, butterflies come naturally; when the Heart is pure, celestials arrive; when there is no attachment in the Heart, there is Tathagata."
Not gripping anything. Not clinging to outcomes. Not defending a self. That is the Tathagata — the state of a Buddha — and it begins with the inner Spirit.
The One-Line Summary¶
The inner Spirit is the union of Heart and Spirit-Force; its quality decides where LIFE goes. Purifying the inner Spirit and tending the Soul Garden is humanity's most important task — and the only path toward becoming a celestial or a Buddha.
