Thinking (Overview) β Friendly Version¶
Your Thinking Determines Who You Are¶
Imagine three creatures standing in the same forest.
A caterpillar can only sense the branch directly in front of it. A bird can survey the entire forest from above. A satellite can see the whole Earth.
They're looking at the same world β but at completely different dimensions of it.
The Lifechanyuan system tells us: human thinking works exactly like this. The depth and breadth of your thinking determines which level of reality you actually inhabit.
What Is Thinking?¶
Thinking is the dimension and process of thought, contemplation, and reflection. Put simply: whatever mode you use to understand the world is the level of thinking you possess.
Thinking is the core of consciousness. Your troubles, suffering, and joy all come from consciousness β and the most crucial part of consciousness is thinking. That's why:
The most important thing in life is not to seek ways to acquire material things, but to seek ways to change thinking.

The Eight Ladders of Thinking β Which Floor Are You On?¶
The Lifechanyuan system maps thinking into eight levels β like an eight-story building.
π Ground Floor: Material Thinking¶
"Seeing is believing. Profit comes first."
Only surface phenomena are visible; the "why" goes unasked. Most people operate here most of the time: earn money, eat, sleep, repeat. This is the most basic mode β essentially the thinking of animals.
π¨ Second Floor: Imagery Thinking¶
"Turning reality into art."
The capacity to elevate concrete things into symbols, melodies, and artistic forms. Beethoven didn't just hear sound β he heard eternity. Artists and musicians tend to operate at this level.
π‘ Third Floor: Associative Thinking¶
"An apple falls; gravity rises."
Seeing one thing and grasping the pattern behind it. Newton saw an apple fall and discovered universal gravitation; Einstein imagined riding a beam of light and arrived at relativity. Scientists operate here.
π Fourth Floor: Illusory Thinking¶
"Going in circles, arriving back at the start."
This level is peculiar β it is rigorously logical, makes perfect sense, but ultimately circles back to where it began. Many religious systems, prophets, and fortune-tellers operate here. It sounds profound, but can never break through to something genuinely new.
β¨ Fifth Floor: Heart-Image Thinking¶
"Close your eyes β where are you now?"
The capacity to create images in the heart-mind and perceive spaces beyond what physical eyes can see. Muhammad could "see" angels and heaven β not hallucination, but Heart-Image Thinking in action. At this level, you begin to touch the true mysteries of LIFE.
β―οΈ Sixth Floor: Taiji Thinking¶
"Every opposition is a unity."
The capacity to see the unity beneath all polarities and to grasp the essential thread of the myriad phenomena. Laozi's Tao Te Ching is the crystallization of Taiji Thinking: "The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao." Great philosophers operate here.
πΈ Seventh Floor: Non-Form Thinking¶
"Release all appearances; see the source directly."
No longer bound by any shape, color, or concept β directly perceiving the true nature of all things. Shakyamuni reached this level. Upon entering Non-Form Thinking, one has essentially "seen through to one's original nature."
π Eighth Floor: Hundun Thinking¶
"All is heavenly mystery; intention is creation."
This is the thinking of the Greatest Creator. At this level, thinking itself is dharma power β universes can be created at will. Vanishingly few human beings have come close to this level.
Why Does Changing Thinking Matter So Much?¶
There's a statement that says it directly:
Whatever mode of thinking you have, that is the form of existence your life will take.
β Xuefeng
Your current life is the result of your past thinking. The direction your life takes after death is determined by your thinking now.
If you constantly think "not enough money, not enough time, other people are wrong" β you're living on the ground floor.
If you start thinking "what can I create? What patterns can I understand?" β you've started moving up.
If you begin asking "Who am I? What is the meaning of LIFE? Where is the source of the universe?" β you're already reaching toward higher floors.
The Biggest Enemy: Fixed Mindset¶
The greatest obstacle to thinking isn't stupidity. It's fixedness.
Long-standing habits tend to form fixed mindsets; once thinking becomes fixed, it is very difficult to break through.
β 800 New Concepts, No. 668
Habit, knowledge, history β once these three solidify into "this is just how it is," they become a cage.
The Lifechanyuan system calls this the "Thinking Formation": invisible higher-level thinking information waves that lock people in lower-dimensional worlds, making them believe that's all there is.
The only way to break through: elevate thinking to the next level. Not smashing the rules β transcending them.
Where to Begin?¶
A few starting points:
- Ask "why" more β don't just observe surface phenomena; chase the deeper cause
- Practice Abnormal Thinking: for anything "obvious," ask yourself "what if the opposite were true?"
- Visualize higher life spaces: regularly create beautiful images in your mind β this is the doorway to Heart-Image Thinking
- Release fixed conclusions: allow yourself to be overturned; hold beliefs lightly
- Read the Chanyuan Corpus and Xuefeng's Writings: they contain extensive guidance for upgrading thinking
One Sentence to Remember¶
Thinking is your life's dimension β how high it goes determines which world you live in.
