Tianming — Heavenly Mandate (Internal Edition)¶
Overview¶
In the Lifechanyuan system, "Tianming" (Heavenly Mandate) encompasses three levels: first, the innate talents and mission Heaven endows each life with; second, the life trajectory and fate pre-arranged by the Dao (the cosmic program); and third, the inevitable law governing all things in the universe. "Knowing one's tianming" is a key stage in cultivation — recognizing what you are made of, being yourself, and following Heaven's arrangement. "Transcending fate" is the higher aspiration: 98% of people follow the fate-script, while 1–2% of Chanyuan Celestials, through abnormal thinking and awakening spiritual sensing, move from the realm of necessity into the realm of freedom.
I. Definition and Nature of Tianming¶
(i) Classical Meaning of Tianming¶
Tianming is the mission bestowed by Heaven — or, tianming is the innate talent and destiny one is born with.

A peach tree can only bear peaches; an apricot tree can only bear apricots; a rooster can only crow; a hen can only lay eggs — this is tianming. Read through the wordless Book of Heaven and you will find that everything is heaven-born, heaven-grown, heaven-punished, and heaven-extinguished. Genius is heaven-born, not cultivated by later learning. One born a thief will surely steal; one born a king will surely gather talented people.

(ii) Philosophical Foundation of Fatalism: The Dao Is a Program¶
The Dao is a program, a perfected operating mechanism that no person or force can resist — one can only follow the Dao. Earth can only revolve around the sun within the solar system; the moon can only orbit Earth. This is the fate of Earth and the moon. They are powerless to do otherwise — it can only be this way.

The entire universe — including every life within it — is arranged in order according to a program. One might say that everything is being performed according to a "script." Every form of life, every person, is a role already determined in the script and can only enact the plot as written: when to be born, when to die, when to prosper, when to fall ill, when to suffer disaster, when to hold office — all of it is planned. This is fate. Humans can only be thus.

(iii) The Relationship Between Tianming and Fate¶
The Greatest Creator does not govern human fate. Ultimately, each person's fate is fashioned by themselves — fate is the result of one's consciousness.

II. Knowing One's Tianming: Recognizing and Being Oneself¶
(i) The True Meaning of "Knowing One's Tianming"¶
Among the wisest figures in Chinese history are Jiang Ziya, Zhang Liang, and Zhuge Liang. Jiang Ziya's wisdom undoubtedly surpassed King Wen of Zhou; Zhang Liang's strategy certainly surpassed Liu Bang; Zhuge Liang's brilliance certainly surpassed Liu Bei. Yet why did none of them displace these rulers to establish their own kingdoms? Because Jiang Ziya, Zhang Liang, and Zhuge Liang "knew their tianming" — they knew their mandate was to assist, not to be king.

A bird can soar in the sky, but if it enters the water it is not only helpless — it faces utter destruction. The capacity for generalship and the capacity for command are two entirely different domains; the talents required of a king and those required of a strategist are wholly different.

(ii) Confucius's Stage of "Knowing Tianming"¶
"At fifteen I set my heart on learning; at thirty I stood firm; at forty I was free of doubts; at fifty I knew the decrees of Heaven; at sixty my ear was an obedient organ for the reception of truth; at seventy I could follow what my heart desired without transgressing what was right." — This is Confucius's framework of life-stage attainment.

Do you know the renowned figure in CCP history, Zhou Enlai? The reason he came to a peaceful end was that he "knew his tianming." Zhou Enlai paid his respects at the tomb of Zhang Liang, not at the tomb of Liu Bang — this is what preserved his life. Otherwise, he would have met the fate of Liu Shaoqi or Lin Biao. The core of On "Tianming" is: be yourself, and by no means scheme or maneuver.

(iii) How to Know One's Own Tianming¶
Be yourself. If you enjoy farming, farm honestly and diligently. If you enjoy teaching, be a conscientious teacher. Do not look at how others live. Knowing what you are capable of — that is "knowing your tianming."
(Source: Xuefeng's Collected Works · Admonitions · On "Tianming," Xuefeng)
Young people will not know it. Confucius "knew Heaven's decree at fifty." Without passing through the pain and torment of life, without reading the wordless Book of Heaven, without constantly contemplating Heaven, Earth, humanity, and the world, it is very difficult to "know one's tianming."

III. Tianming Cannot Be Violated: The Philosophy of Following Heaven's Arrangement¶
(i) Violating Tianming Brings Hardship¶
"Tianming cannot be violated." Whoever violates their heavenly mandate will inevitably encounter obstacles and misfortune. From this we know: when nothing goes right or disaster strikes, it is surely because tianming has been violated. If we follow Heaven's arrangement, life is basically smooth and unimpeded.
(Source: Xuefeng's Collected Works · Admonitions · On "Tianming," Xuefeng)
From this we know: when eating coarse bread, eat it joyfully — do not envy another's feast; when living in a thatched hut, live happily — do not be jealous of another's mansion; seeing others run businesses and make money easily, by no means let the thought arise that you too should start a business; seeing others become celebrities or internet influencers, by no means follow their footsteps in imitation; seeing others become spiritual leaders, by no means act mystically as if you too wish to become the returning Jesus, the Purple Thorn Sage, or Maitreya Buddha.

(ii) The Attitude of Following Tianming¶
"Do your human best, then follow Heaven's decree." Each day, do what is in your power to do — do it thoroughly and completely. Be wholehearted toward family, friends, society, and nature. Be diligent in your daily work. With such an approach, there is no regret. As for whether wishes are fulfilled or ideals realized, "do not be anxious for what you desire." … As long as you have been wholehearted and diligent, there is no worry!

(iii) The Higher Attainment: Following the Heart Without Transgression¶
Revere the Greatest Creator, revere LIFE, revere nature. Walk the path of the Greatest Creator: at ease wherever you are, transforming with conditions, moving as nature moves, acting as circumstances arise. In this way, whatever you do is right, whatever you say is correct, whatever you think is fitting.

IV. The Human Life Script: This Life Is Fixed, the Next Life Is Open¶
(i) Life Is Enacted According to a Script¶
The human world is a grand script. People living within this grand script are merely characters in it. Who plays the lead, who plays a supporting role, who is an extra, who enters when, who exits when — all is planned. Though people do not feel this themselves — though each person feels that all their choices and decisions are their own — the actual situation is that our every word and action has already been arranged.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
The script of this present life is already settled; the script of future lives changes at any moment. … Based on a person's past thoughts, intentions, and actions, that person's future life trajectory is determined. For instance, someone's life trajectory is set to go to the Celestial Islands Continent, but during the enactment of their role they had unwholesome thoughts and did not play the role well — then the life trajectory leading to the Celestial Islands Continent will deviate.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Evangelism · Exploring the Secret of the Human Life Script, Xuefeng)
(ii) Thought-Intention Is the Expression of Free Will¶
Personal effort is expressed in thought-intentions and in how perfectly one enacts one's role. A person's thought-activity is not arranged by the script — free will is expressed in whether one's thought-intentions and role enactment reach perfection. … Whether to give rise to wholesome or unwholesome intentions is entirely one's own choice. Inner activity is thinking activity; thinking activity is a kind of wave, and this wave propagates into the universe. … The Dao-program automatically arranges your future fate and life trajectory based on your inner activity. This is karma.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Evangelism · Exploring the Secret of the Human Life Script, Xuefeng)
(iii) Merit Is the Bank Deposit of Fate¶
The Dao's impartiality is expressed in this: the Dao gives entirely according to the needs of each life. … Whatever you need, the Dao will surely fulfill and accomplish it for you. Now, a core question arises: you want a luxury car worth ten million — the Dao first checks your bank balance, which is what we commonly call merit (功德). If the merit is insufficient, a ten-million luxury car cannot be provided. Even for something as small as a needle, the bank balance must be checked.

V. Transcending Fate: Abnormal Thinking and the Path of Chanyuan Celestials¶
(i) 98% vs. 1–2%¶
For the masses, the fatalistic view is correct. "Everything is fate — not a single point is up to oneself." People cannot choose the environment and era into which they are born, cannot choose their parents, cannot choose their race or country. There are eighteen factors of life that cannot be self-managed. This is fate; one can only follow Heaven's arrangement.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
All principles have exceptions. "Heaven's net is vast; though wide-meshed, nothing slips through" — yet it also makes exceptions. For 98% of lives, one can only enact the script. For 1%–2% of lives, an exception is made.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
(ii) The Method for Transcending Fate: Abnormal Thinking¶
One must think abnormally — otherwise it is hard to escape fate. Be busy with what the world is idle about; be idle about what the world is busy with. Because 98% of ordinary people enact their lives according to the fate program, their lives and life trajectories have already been scripted. If you want to escape the boundaries of Heaven and Earth, to leap beyond the Three Realms without being bound by the Five Elements, to move out of the realm of necessity into the realm of freedom — you absolutely must not resonate at the same frequency as the general populace's thinking and consciousness. You must "do the opposite."
(Source: New Era Human 800 Concepts, 4th Edition · Concept 669)
What you fear, I do not fear; what you do not fear, I fear. What you are busy with, I am not busy with; what you are not busy with, I am busy with. What you like, I do not like; what you do not like, I like. When you cry, I laugh; when you laugh, I cry …
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
(iii) Knowing the Mysteries Enables Changing Fate¶
One must not only know the what, but also the why — only then can a breakthrough point be found, a passage discovered. … Just as one who understands computer programs can alter the program, one who understands the mysteries of life and human existence can change fate, entering a broader world to enjoy a freer life.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
VI. The Eighteen Factors of Life That Cannot Be Self-Managed¶
There are eighteen factors of life over which a person has no control and can only accept. For instance, one's parents cannot be arranged, chosen, or controlled by oneself. In fact, many, many things in life cannot be chosen, controlled, or arranged by a person. Not to mention that the size of one's own eyes cannot be self-determined — even a single hair cannot be arranged by oneself. Faced with the vast profusion of events, we can only accept fate. If we don't accept it, what can we do?
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Evangelism · Exploring the Secret of the Human Life Script, Xuefeng)
For the masses, everything is tianming — one can only follow Heaven's arrangement. Because you are an ordinary mortal, you fundamentally do not understand what humanity, life, time, and space are. You can only enact your scripted role obediently, according to the designed program.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
VII. The Cultivation Significance of Tianming: From Acceptance to Becoming Celestial¶
(i) Recognizing Fate Is the Precondition for Transcending It¶
The path that Lifechanyuan's tour guide leads is one that runs counter to fate, counter to the ordinary human. The guide first leads people to acknowledge fate, to recognize fate, and then to transcend it. Recognizing fate is relatively easy, but transcending fate is not. It requires hundun (chaos) thinking; thorough understanding of human life, LIFE, time, and space; detailed mastery of the program and the "script"; and, above all, knowledge of the method for transcending fate.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
(ii) Different Guidance for the 98% and the 1–2% Chanyuan Celestials¶
In summary: for 98% of the general population, everything is the workings of fate. For 1–2% of Chanyuan Celestials, everything is a matter of consciousness and heart-mind.
(Source: Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Fate and the Transcendence of Fate, Xuefeng)
(iii) All Phenomena Arise from the Heart-Mind; the Heart-Mind Transcends All Phenomena¶
All phenomena arise from the heart-mind; the heart-mind transcends all phenomena. The heart arises from circumstance; circumstance is created by the heart. For the masses, everything is tianming — one can only follow Heaven's arrangement. … For those of small wisdom and small faith — you have only a little cleverness, you can be lucid for a moment now and then, but most of the time you are muddled and confused. You do not have enough wisdom and energy to escape the inevitable bonds of the program. Therefore, for you as well, everything is fate.
