The Value, Meaning & Purpose of Life: Why Are You Alive?

I. Three Questions, Not One

"What are you living for?"

That sounds like one question, but it is actually three:

  • Value: How much does your life weigh on the cosmic scale?
  • Meaning: What does your existence do β€” for yourself, for others, for the universe?
  • Purpose: Why are you living the way you are today?

Lifechanyuan offers a clear answer:

The value of human life is to seek the Tao, become a Celestial Being, and journey to the Kingdom of Heaven. The meaning of human life is to fully express one's original nature and please the Greatest Creator.

II. Life Is a Journey

Guide Xuefeng offers a vivid image:

Human life is nothing more than a brief journey that LIFE takes in the human world. But each person's destination is vastly different β€” some end at the Kingdom of Heaven, some at hell, some at the animal realm, some return to the human world.

The most important thing about a journey: where does it end?

The same 24 hours, the same lifetime β€” because people invest in different directions, the destination is entirely different:

Human life is an investment. Invest in sesame seeds and you get sesame seeds; invest in watermelons and you get watermelons.

III. Life vs. LIFE: Two Concepts, Not One

This is one of the system's important distinctions:

Human life (δΊΊη”Ÿ) and LIFE (η”Ÿε‘½) are two concepts β€” interrelated but essentially different. Human life is a fragment of LIFE's journey in the human world; human life is brief, while LIFE is long. Human life is one passage displayed in the long river of LIFE; LIFE is a continuous story stretching from the source of the universe to infinite time and space.

Human life is the process of this particular journey; LIFE is the serial that runs from cosmic origin to boundless eternity.

This gives us four precise definitions:

Value Meaning
Human life Serving LIFE; repaying debt; perfecting the LIFE structure; extending LIFE toward higher spaces Creating wealth and joy; serving oneself, others, and society
LIFE Serving the Greatest Creator; serving nature; maintaining the dynamic balance of cosmic LIFE The universe exists for LIFE; LIFE exists for the universe

Confusing the value of human life with the value of LIFE is a reliable path to confusion.

IV. The Two Purposes of Life: Not One Thing, But Two

Human life has two purposes β€” one for the present, one for the future:

Purpose One: Live with joy, happiness, freedom, and bliss

The purpose of living is to pursue a life of joy, happiness, freedom, and bliss β€” so all human activity should revolve around this purpose. If we ignore this purpose β€” whether we earn a PhD, build a company, become an official, or even cultivate and practice β€” we have everything upside down.

Purpose Two: Dissolve karma and transform, extending LIFE to higher spaces

The purpose of human life is to dissolve karma and transform … If we create no karma and gain perfect human nature, in the next life we can go to the Thousand-Year World; if we also accumulate merit through service, we can enter the Ten-Thousand-Year World; if we create no karma, accumulate merit, and proclaim the Greatest Creator β€” we can enter the eternal life space: the Elysium World.

The two purposes do not conflict β€” they are two aspects of an ascending spiral: live in joy β†’ this naturally draws one toward the mysteries of LIFE β†’ understanding deepens joy further β†’ one becomes a Celestial Being.

V. Why You Don't Know Why You're Alive

Here is a surprising answer:

The meaning of a lower-level LIFE is defined by a higher-level LIFE β€” it cannot be defined by itself.

Do pigs know what they are alive for? They do not. Only humans know. Do humans know what they are alive for? Equally not.

Whether human life has meaning β€” don't ask humans; humans do not know what their own existence means.

Xuefeng tells a parable: the pigs in a pen debate whether pig-life has meaning. The pig farmer watches and finds it laughable. The farmer thinks he understands β€” but a Buddha watching the farmer finds it laughable too.

You don't know why you're alive not because life has no meaning, but because you haven't yet reached the height from which meaning becomes visible.

How do you reach that height?

To understand the meaning of being alive, you must first open spiritual sensing β€” open the Dharma-Eye and the Buddha-Eye. Without this, you are trying to see things in a dark room: nothing is visible.

Once any person truly understands the meaning of being alive β€” they are a Celestial Being.

VI. How to Realize the Value of Life

Method One: Follow the natural Tao

The fundamental value of human existence is to please the Greatest Creator; the path to realizing that value is to follow the natural Tao. Every thing that follows the natural Tao realizes the value of its existence.

A fruit tree bearing fruit, flowers blooming, a hen laying eggs β€” this is their value. A person living naturally, at each stage of life, according to natural rhythms β€” this is the person's value.

Method Two: Never forget the fundamental purpose

Forgetting the purpose of being alive, all speech and action becomes aimless thrashing β€” wasted effort.

Going to school, earning money, gaining official positions, defending various banners…

If none of this revolves around "joy, happiness, freedom, and bliss" and "extending LIFE to higher spaces," it is all wasted effort.

VII. Xuefeng's Own Evolution of Life View

Xuefeng shares two stages of his own life philosophy:

In a half-awakened state, my life view was: Life is a dream β€” the four elements are all empty β€” fully experience β€” leave no regret.

My life view now is: Life is a journey β€” LIFE is boundless β€” create blessings for all beings β€” reach heaven directly.

From "fully experience, leave no regret" to "create blessings, reach heaven" β€” this is the natural arc of a life view that deepens with cultivation.

Summary

Question Answer

What is the meaning of life? Create wealth and joy; please the Greatest Creator; seek the Tao; express original nature
What is the purpose of life? Dissolve karma and transform + live with joy, happiness, freedom, and bliss
Why don't you know the meaning? Lower LIFE cannot self-know; spiritual sensing must be opened first

Human life is finite; LIFE is boundless.

Make good use of this brief journey β€” and decay becomes eternity.
