Chan · The Unwritten Scripture · Divine Revelation

Chan (禅, Zen) is the supreme method of awakening to the Tao; the Unwritten Scripture (无字天书) is the totality of natural phenomena—the wordless, symbolless book of the cosmos itself; Divine Revelation (天启, Tianqi) is the language the Greatest Creator uses to communicate with humanity through all things and phenomena. The three are facets of the same mystery: Tianqi is the content, the Unwritten Scripture is the medium, and Chan is the method for reading it.

Nothing in the universe is without meaning—every falling leaf, every illness, every chance encounter is the Greatest Creator speaking. Reading this omnipresent language requires two faculties working together: spiritual sensing (灵觉) to perceive the presence of the Greatest Creator, and wisdom (智慧) to understand what He is saying. Chan's essence is "no reliance on written words, transmission outside the scriptures"—not expressible in language, only perceived heart-to-heart. When Shakyamuni held up a flower and Mahakashyapa smiled in recognition: this is Chan.
