Transcending the Ordinary (Chaofan Tuosu / 超凡脱俗)¶
Transcending the Ordinary (chaofan tuosu 超凡脱俗) is both a necessary state for becoming a celestial being and the defining mark of the highest grade of human life. In the Lifechanyuan system, "the vulgar" (sú 俗) — money, power, fame, cunning, flattery, and social posturing — is captured in one word: agitation (zào 躁). "The ordinary" (fán 凡) — human sentiments, social ties, worldly affairs — is captured in one word: noise (nào 闹). The celestial realm, by contrast, is captured in two words: stillness and clarity (qīng jìng 清静). Transcending the ordinary is simply the process of moving away from agitation and noise toward stillness and clarity. Its counterpart concept is Inverted Advance (fǎncháng tuìjìn 反常退进): the value-system of celestial beings is the value-system of ordinary people turned upside-down.
