Ethereal sound (kōng líng miào yīn 空灵妙音) is the inner spiritual perception that naturally arises in advanced cultivators who have entered the ling-empty state — a non-material experience that is neither ordinary hearing nor imagination, but rather the reception of celestial resonance combined with the flow of one's own life-consciousness structure. It is one of the eight great mysteries of LIFE.

The authentic Chan melody (běn zhēn chán qū 本真禅曲) is another name for the same phenomenon: the original melody closest to life's true nature — beyond any music, any language, irreproducible by any means.
