Debt Repayment (Internal)¶

I. Definition and Cosmological Foundation¶
A human life is a life of repaying debts. As long as those debts remain unsettled, we cannot leave this world. Without understanding this truth, one's life is a life of bewilderment β just one more face in the endless crowd.
The wisest life is to repay debts to the maximum extent and never incur new ones β which means generating only merit, never wrongdoing. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Wisdom Β· Enemies Are Benefactors β The Way of Debt Repayment)

Defective LIFE is, above all, indebted LIFE. Whether in Heaven or the human world, debts must be repaid. This is stipulated and regulated by the law that the sum of positive and negative energy in the universe equals zero. From this we understand: the main task of a human lifetime is to repay debts. When the debts are settled, you return to Heaven. When they are not settled, you continue reincarnating in the human world. If you not only fail to settle your debts but accumulate more, you must exist in a space lower than the human realm. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· LIFE Β· Tribulations on the Journey of LIFE Are Necessary)

All of this is called the combination of causes and conditions. It looks disordered, like chaos, like pure coincidence β but everything in our current situation, whether comfortable or difficult, joyful or distressing, is the result of our past words and actions: the causes we planted in this life, and in lives before this one. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Wisdom Β· Enemies Are Benefactors)

Worldly bonds not yet released β must reincarnate. Debts not yet settled β must return. (New Era 800 Concepts Β· 4th Edition Β· Concept 797)
II. Sources of Debt¶
If we had not incurred karmic debt in the human world, we could not have been born here. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Wisdom Β· Enemies Are Benefactors)
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Ancestors pass on not only physiological traits but also portions of karmic debt. "Children repay parental debts" refers not only to explicit obligations but to hidden ones β wrongdoing done through power or scheming, creating unjust cases; arrogance expressed through desecrating the Greatest Creator, poisoning living beings, destroying ecosystems, killing the innocent. These accumulated debts of blood and tears affect not only the perpetrator but reach through to descendants. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Cultivation Β· 18 Factors That Shape Destiny)
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Every person has their own LIFE trajectory; every person has their own debt-and-karmic-affinity; every person has their own character and gifts; every person has their own mission and responsibility. No matter what others do, no matter how badly they handle things β do not complain. Complaining is a poisoned arrow. (Guide's Other Articles Β· 2009 Β· Starting Again from the ABCs of Cultivation)
III. The Five Debt Categories β Direct Repayment¶
Here is how to repay debts:
We are born into the world, breathing the essence of sun and moon, the vitality of heaven and earth, receiving the caress of nature β we owe nature a debt. For this, sincere gratitude and not despoiling it is sufficient.
We live within society, protected by its laws and constitution β we owe society a debt. For this, not opposing the government is sufficient.
Our LIFE originates from the Greatest Creator β we owe the Greatest Creator a debt. For this, walking the Greatest Creator's way is sufficient.
Our body came from our parents β their grace of nurturing exceeds mountains and seas. We owe our parents a debt. For this, wholehearted filial care is sufficient.
If we have had a teacher who illuminated us, educated us, helped us understand the truth of LIFE and step onto the great path β we owe the teacher a debt. For this, a sincere "thank you" is sufficient.
Beyond these great benefactor-debts, all other debts are one-for-one equivalents. Gratitude and thanks alone are insufficient β exact repayment is required.
First: the debt between spouses. "Spouses are like birds sharing a branch β when the time comes they each fly their own way." By the time death approaches, it is too late. So in daily life, absorb more of your partner's grievances than you put out. Give maximum freedom. Even if seriously wronged β receive it without resentment or retaliation, with joy. Why? Because the debt is thereby canceled. You owe nothing more. You are free to walk your own path.
Next: the debt to children. Children are creditors. They were born into your household precisely to collect what you owe. Raise them without complaint, with wholehearted effort and genuine joy. Do not bargain; only give; do not expect return. Whether they honor you in return is their own affair. Do not resent unfilial children β the more unfilial they are, the more completely and cleanly your debt is settled. As for old age: even if you die of starvation or illness, with no one to attend you, accept it without resentment. The more ignoble the death, the more glorious the rebirth.
Then: debts to siblings, relatives, friends, and strangers. Settle these promptly. Do not take the smallest advantage. There is no free lunch in the world. Better to give more than you receive. Better to die debt-free than live as a debtor seeking longevity.
Finally: debts to domestic and wild animals. We benefit from them in every direction β they bring us joy, share our labor, provide food, supply material for clothing and shelter. This was the Tao's arrangement, but a debt is a debt. We humans are not so great that we can take and destroy animal lives at will. As practitioners, we regard all LIFE equally. Repay: do not abuse or mistreat any creature, do not needlessly kill, treat all animals with sympathy and compassion. When eating their flesh, pray silently for them: may they transcend the cycle of rebirth soon and reach the Pure Land. Honoring parents is for gratitude β for repaying debt, completing obligations, achieving perfect human nature. But it is absolutely not the purpose of life. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Cultivation Β· Standards of Perfect Human Nature)
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Honoring parents, raising children, caring for siblings and relatives, contributing to society β all of these are debt repayment, aimed at releasing worldly bonds so we are not reincarnated again into this world of suffering, tribulation, and distress. (Guide's Other Articles Β· 2006 Β· Releasing Worldly Bonds, Cultivating Celestial Ones)
IV. Enemies Are Benefactors β A Special Repayment Channel¶
Beyond the above, there is one more channel: treating enemies as benefactors. When someone bullies, oppresses, mistreats, or harms us β they are, through their own wrongdoing, helping us repay our debts. We should seek nothing better, and receive this gladly. Benefactors are our enemies, enemies are our benefactors. Benefactors tie us to the human world; enemies help us escape it. For the practitioner, good is evil and evil is good. Without others' evil, we cannot perfect our own goodness. The more foolish people there are, the more opportunities to attain celestial being and Buddhahood. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Wisdom Β· Enemies Are Benefactors)
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Jesus taught us: if someone strikes your left cheek, turn the right one as well. ΕΔkyamuni told us with deep feeling: when the world demeans you, the sins of former lives are thereby extinguished. Even Mao Zedong taught that the lowly are the most intelligent and the noble are the most foolish. The immortal Laozi told us even more: the Tao, to save and help people, must first let them suffer and be tried. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Wisdom Β· Enemies Are Benefactors)
V. Tribulation β Passive Repayment Arranged by the Tao¶
Because self-interest is structurally built into the human form, voluntary debt repayment is extremely difficult. So the Tao arranges tribulations and hardships to repay what self-interest prevents us from clearing. This is determined by the justice of the Tao. We must understand: tribulations on the journey of LIFE are necessary.
Flowers bloom and then fall; tides rise and then recede. The moon tells us: a full moon comes only once a month β the waning moon is the normal state. So when facing tribulation, maintain a calm heart, even a joyful one β because you are repaying a debt. Borrowing is easy; repaying is painful. But however painful, repay with joy.
Tribulations can rarely be entirely avoided, but they can be reduced to a bearable level. The best way to lighten them: do meritorious work. The best meritorious work: selfless giving and contribution. There is no other path. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· LIFE Β· Tribulations on the Journey of LIFE Are Necessary)
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Who would want to be reborn as a pig? The question is not wanting or not wanting β it is necessity. When a person's debt load is so enormous that ordinary repayment paths cannot clear it, the arrangement is to be reborn as a pig: offering blood, flesh, bone, skin, and hide, and receiving the knife β only then can the debt be partially cleared and a return to human incarnation be made possible. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· LIFE Β· Tribulations on the Journey of LIFE Are Necessary)
VI. Merit Substitution β Repayment Through Formless Giving¶
The best method for releasing worldly bonds is formless giving and merit-building. With enough merit deposited in the Tao's bank, the Tao automatically handles the settlement on your behalf. You need not repay debt A directly to creditor A β you can settle it by giving selflessly to persons B, C, and D. For example: your parents have passed and you never adequately repaid them. Through merit-building for others, you can clear the debt owed to your parents.
"Rather let others be indebted to me than owe anyone anything myself" β this is the master guideline of cultivation practice. Do not seek any advantage; give more than you receive. Not only does this settle outstanding debts β it builds treasure in Heaven. (Guide's Other Articles Β· 2006 Β· Releasing Worldly Bonds, Cultivating Celestial Ones)

When we cultivate and practice, our aim is to reach the highest states of human life and LIFE itself. When we do meritorious work, we are releasing our own bonds, building our own treasure in Heaven. In relation to others, in relation to humanity, we have no particular merit to claim. (Xuefeng Corpus Β· Chanyuan Β· New Opening, New Rules)
VII. Second Home β The Lightest Repayment Path¶
Participating in Lifechanyuan and building the Second Home turns out to be the simplest, most natural, most effortless form of cultivation. No need for the hardship of ascetics; no need for the isolation of mountain retreat. Simply in the ordinary rhythm of daily communal life β in laughter, warmth, banter, and play β you accomplish all three of the great tasks of celestial cultivation: repay debts, accumulate merit, perfect character. It looks like an unremarkable life. Hidden inside is the secret of LIFE's ascension. This is the profound wonder of the "Heaven on Earth." The greatest examples in human history are Jesus and ΕΔkyamuni. Jesus settled his debts through his blood and the merit he had accumulated β and additionally redeemed his followers from their sins. That is how he became divine. ΕΔkyamuni taught for decades, enlightening countless beings; his merit filled the cosmos; he owed nothing more to the human world. That is how he became a Buddha.
In the mythological novel Investiture of the Gods, Nezha dismembered himself to repay the debt owed to his parents. He was reborn through a lotus flower and became a minor deity in the celestial realm. In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong endured eighty-one ordeals to repay the life-saving grace of Tang Sanzang. Even when falsely accused and expelled from the journey by Tang Sanzang β who was full of grievance β Sun Wukong still knelt and bowed before leaving, determined to repay every last bit of his debt. At the end of all this, he attained full enlightenment.
Repay debts in every direction, and attain the Tao in every direction. Relinquish in every direction, and gain in every direction.
Is the practitioner a fool? On the contrary β the practitioner is the clearest-headed, most far-sighted person alive. (Chanyuan Corpus Β· Wisdom Β· Enemies Are Benefactors β The Way of Debt Repayment)
