The Eight Guidelines, Eight Mysteries, Eight Heavenly Secrets, and Eight Bewilderments of Life — Friendly Version¶
Xuefeng's Four "Owner's Manuals" for Life¶
Xuefeng wrote four sets of "eights" — four different lenses for understanding how life actually works:
- Eight Guidelines — the eight principles to live by
- Eight Mysteries — eight hidden secrets you can actively use
- Eight Heavenly Secrets — eight laws of the universe that show up in your life (often not the way you'd expect)
- Eight Bewilderments — eight traps most people fall into without realizing it
The Eight Guidelines: Your Life's Roadmap¶
"Life is LIFE's journey through the human world… To make life rich and colorful and arrive safely at the ideal destination, we must always remember and follow the Eight Guidelines."
1. Trust in the Greatest Creator. He is your signpost, lighthouse, and source of wisdom. Without him, your journey is blind.
2. Diligence and Creation. "Laziness and indulgence are the narcotics that destroy life." Work and create — this is how the road gets wider.
3. Respect elders and care for the young. Living is living among people. If your existence brings joy to others, your roots go deep.
4. Maintain balance. Don't go to extremes. Move with the situation, conditions, nature, and the moment — advance when you can, hold when you must.
5. Independence and self-reliance. Don't bind yourself to any organization — religious, political, or otherwise. Keep hold of your own destiny.
6. Seek nothing extraordinary. "What the Greatest Creator has given us is already sufficient." No need to chase special powers, fame, or wealth. When it is time to sleep, sleep. When it is time to eat, eat.
7. Forgive yourself. There are no perfect people. Forgive yourself, repent to the Greatest Creator, and liberate yourself.
8. Hold dreams. Think beautiful thoughts, create your own beautiful inner world, and reward yourself with joy.
"Follow the Eight Guidelines and the journey of life will be filled with fair weather and beautiful scenery without limit."
The Eight Heavenly Secrets: Life Works Backwards¶
These eight rules are all counter-intuitive. The universe doesn't always work the way common sense suggests.
| What you might think | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| More possessions = more happiness | The more you possess, the more worry you have |
| More receiving = more fortune | The more you receive, the less fortune remains |
| Talking a lot = wisdom | The more words spoken, the greater the damage |
| Take shortcuts to save time | The more you seek shortcuts, the longer the road |
| Strive hard to succeed | The more you give, the more you receive (not hoard) |
And three about soul quality: - Uglier soul → more suffering (your life's pain reflects your inner condition) - More beautiful soul → more beautiful future (beautiful minds attract beautiful things) - More beautiful inner structure → more beautiful outer appearance (the inside shapes the outside)
And one about the ego: - Stronger ego-clinging → farther from the Way (those most convinced they are right are often furthest from the truth)
The Eight Mysteries: Eight Things You Can Actually Do¶
These aren't just facts about the universe — they're tools you can use.
1. In extreme danger, call on the Greatest Creator. He is always the closest to us. A miracle can happen. Try it.
2. Say "No" to ward off disaster. When your mind starts imagining negative scenarios, immediately say "No!" — and the danger can be redirected.
3. Trust feeling over analysis. When deciding if someone is trustworthy, your feeling in the moment is more reliable than your analytical reasoning. Feel good? Go with it. Feel off? Trust that.
4. Capture the first impression. The very first impression someone gives you is the most accurate. Even if they later seem different, trust what you felt at the start.
5. Repentance can dissolve karma. You have harmed someone; the consequence is coming. But if you genuinely repent to the Greatest Creator, the seed can be uprooted before it bears fruit.
6. In vagueness and trance, truth arrives. Deep insights don't come from intense mental concentration. They come in a relaxed, drifting, semi-conscious state — where the ego steps aside.
7. The ethereal-spiritual-beautiful is inexhaustibly wondrous. When you enter a state of spaciousness, lightness, and quiet beauty — you unite with the Way. This is the peak experience of life.
8. Read the Wordless Scripture to talk with the Greatest Creator. Everything around you — every leaf, every encounter, every moment — is the "Wordless Scripture" the Greatest Creator has written. Learn to read it, and you are in direct conversation with him.
The Eight Bewilderments: Which Trap Are You In?¶
"Countless calamities arise because the mind was bewildered at the time."
Affairs Bewilderment — Doing things that didn't need doing at all, and getting overwhelmed by the consequences.
Direction Bewilderment — Going the wrong way for half a day, half a year, or half a lifetime before realizing the mistake.
Emotional Bewilderment — Being possessed by romantic love. "There is beautiful grass everywhere under the sky." Why not move gently with conditions instead?
Life Bewilderment — Forgetting why you're here. Spending life chasing possessions only to leave them all behind. "Knowing the ending, remaining infatuated anyway."
Kinship Bewilderment — Living your entire life as a "slave to kinship" — missing the vast open territory of life beyond blood ties.
Marriage Bewilderment — "Marriage is a cage one builds for oneself. In the Kingdom of Heaven, people neither marry nor are given in marriage." Yet people rush in, and cannot be stopped.
Ambition Bewilderment — Chasing fame, status, power, and legacy. "It looks splendid; it is actually tragic."
Intelligence Bewilderment — Thinking you are wiser than others. From the celestials' view, "even the wisest human being is still just a human being." Everyone believes their own perspective is correct. This is the deepest trap of all.
The Way Out¶
"In truth, people only need to be a little careful, give themselves a little time to assess before they act — and they will find their way out of bewilderment and avoid countless misfortunes."
Read the Eight Guidelines. Know the Eight Heavenly Secrets. Use the Eight Mysteries. Recognize your Eight Bewilderments. These four sets together form a complete map of the life journey.
