I. The Five Debts — Where Emotional Debt Fits¶
There are five kinds of debt: material debt, financial debt, emotional debt, cosmic debt, and life debt.
Material debt: If you have borrowed or taken something from others without returning it, you have incurred material debt.
Financial debt: If you have borrowed or used others' money without repaying it, you have incurred financial debt.
Emotional debt: If you have received help, or physical, psychological, or spiritual comfort from others without offering corresponding reciprocation, you have incurred emotional debt.
Cosmic debt: Whenever you have harmed nature or other beings without sufficient contribution or offering in return, you have incurred cosmic debt.
Life debt: As the saying goes, "taking a life demands a life." In truth, killing any living being must be repaid with one's own life. If such killing has not yet been repaid, you carry life debt.
We must remain alert and remember: as long as any of these debts remain unpaid, reincarnation is inevitable. There is not the slightest hope of reaching Heaven.
This entry focuses on emotional debt. (Chanyuan Corpus · Preaching Chapter · Emotional Debt, 2022-01-31)
II. Two Types of Emotional Debt¶
Emotional debt divides into social debt and romantic debt.
Social debt arises when others have helped you but you have not helped them in return. Therefore, each person should carefully recall who has helped them; if you received help from someone without returning equivalent help, find a way to help that person as soon as possible. One Lifechanyuan principle states: "Do not assist those who have not asked for your help." If someone did not ask for your help and you helped them anyway, you actually harmed them — because they now owe you social debt, and you are condemning them to repay it in a future life as cattle, swine, or livestock. This is cruel.
Romantic debt arises primarily from the love between men and women. Human beings need comfort — physical, spiritual, and emotional. When a person receives physical, spiritual, or emotional comfort from a partner without offering corresponding comfort in return, they have incurred emotional debt.
Within emotional debt there is also affinity debt: once you feel that a relationship is unfinished, that you owe something to someone, or that deep feeling and fond memories linger unresolved — this too constitutes emotional debt. (Chanyuan Corpus · Preaching Chapter · Emotional Debt, 2022-01-31)
III. Social Debt Is a Chain on the Spirit¶
Do not, to the greatest extent possible, incur social debt. Social debt is a chain on the spirit — once incurred and left unpaid, it binds a person for their entire life. (Chanyuan Corpus · Life Manual Chapter · Knowledge for Living, Part 2)
IV. Emotional Debt Blocks Freedom¶
As long as you carry social debt and financial debt, do not expect to achieve freedom of body and mind. (Chanyuan Corpus · Human Life Chapter · The Road to Freedom)
V. Unresolved Feelings Make Ease Impossible¶
Your heart carries attachment, entanglement, desire, anxiety, and worry. Worldly bonds remain unresolved; burdens weigh heavily... some feelings remain unfinished, some debts unpaid... In such a psychological and spiritual state, it is impossible to move through life with ease. Not being consumed by sighs and gloom from morning to night would already be remarkable. (Chanyuan Corpus · Celestial Cultivation Chapter · The Dividing Line Between Ease and Its Absence)
VI. Human Feeling Is Debt in Disguise¶
Human emotion is endlessly clinging feeling — feeling saturated with joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, aversion, and desire. It is feeling that shifts the moment conditions change, feeling that cannot be stopped or held, a feeling that wraps around the self like debt, that lingers like a broken lotus stem, that inevitably leads to reincarnation, to endless new affinities, endless repayments, forever without conclusion. VII. Emotional Debt as the Final Obstacle to Heaven¶
The teaching states: it matters not what kind of debt it is — financial, emotional, or blood debt — once incurred, it must be repaid. If unpaid in this life, it will be repaid in the next as beast of burden, swine, or dog. As long as debt remains, entry into Heavenly life is forever barred. (Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom Chapter · "A Person's Enemies Will Be Those of Their Own Household")
Consider this scenario: you wish to reach the Thousand-Year World, but someone's soul prevents you from going — because, they say, you still owe them money; another says they once helped you and you still owe them social debt. (Xuefeng Corpus · Miscellaneous Essays · Prepare Early for the Final Hundred Years)
VIII. The Method for Repaying Emotional Debt¶
One of the core tasks of cultivation and refinement is to strive diligently to repay material debt, financial debt, emotional debt, cosmic debt, and life debt. The most effective method for repayment is formless giving — selfless contribution without seeking return. Formless giving is especially the best method for repaying cosmic debt. On this New Year's Eve, may everyone be clear of heart and bright of mind; give more, take less; and as the new lunar year begins, repay all debts, dissolve all worldly bonds, and travel freely and joyfully toward Heaven. (Chanyuan Corpus · Preaching Chapter · Emotional Debt, 2022-01-31)
IX. Transcending Emotional Debt — Celestial Feeling¶
Celestial feeling is feeling that holds only joy, happiness, freedom, and bliss — feeling that carries no debt. It is eternally continuous, endlessly loving, spanning time and space with fragrant elegance, bringing only beautiful longing and lasting bodily and mental ease, without a trace of sorrow or suffering.
