Past Life, Present Life, and Future Life (Academic Version)¶
Abstract¶
"Past life, present life, and future life" represents the temporal dimension of Lifechanyuan's spiritual cosmology. Unlike the Buddhist six-path reincarnation model, Lifechanyuan frames the three-life continuum as a precise karmic programming system: the consciousness activity and behavioral record of past lives are encoded in the Dao (the cosmic program), generating the present life's "fate-formation" (命阵, a predefined destiny matrix); the present life's mental intentions and cultivation achievements are continuously written into the future life's script. The bond linking all three segments is not a continuity of personal identity, but the precise transfer of merit and karmic debt. Memory erasure during reincarnation is a built-in mechanism (memories stored in the negative universe), and one of the core tasks of cultivation is to open spiritual awareness and restore connectivity across the three-life continuum.

I. Cosmological Framework¶
Lifechanyuan embeds "past life, present life, and future life" within its cosmic drama theory. The universe is a multi-layered, nested system of scripts. Each LIFE's three-segment trajectory is an automatically generated karmic record — the result of that LIFE's consciousness waves registered in the Dao (the cosmic program).
Three-Segment Definitions: - Past life: All prior existences before the present life; their consciousness activity, merits, and transgressions constitute the raw data for the present life's "fate-formation" - Present life: The current role-playing phase in the human realm; the large framework of destiny is essentially fixed (determined by past-life causes), but mental intentions and cultivation continuously affect the future life - Future life: The next phase of existence after this life ends; its script is "alive" and updates continuously with present-life behavior
II. The Memory Erasure Mechanism¶
Lifechanyuan offers a specific explanation for why humans do not remember past lives:
- Mechanism: Past-life memories are systematically erased during reincarnation (the Life-and-Death Formation), and one reappears in a "new self" identity
- Storage location: Past-life memories are stored in the negative universe (antimatter world) and do not enter the present-life physical consciousness
- Consequence of full access: If all past-life memories were opened, the person would merge with the Dao and could no longer distinguish a separate self — this is the state of beings in the Ten-Thousand-Year World and above
This resonates cross-culturally with the Mengpo's broth legend in Chinese folklore, but Lifechanyuan provides a cosmological mechanism (negative universe storage) rather than a mythological explanation.
III. The Past-Life → Present-Life Transfer Pathway¶
Pathway One: The Fate-Formation (macroscopic) - The Dao generates the present-life fate-formation based on past-life genetic information - The fate-formation encompasses: parents, gender, birth date and location, character, talents, wealth level, health, and major life events — approximately 18 unchosen parameters - The fate-formation is a "one-time total accounting" that cannot be altered within this lifetime
Pathway Two: Character (intermediate) - Character is not inherited from parents but is a continuation of the past LIFE carrier's traits - Those whose past-life LIFE carrier was an animal carry residual animal-nature tendencies (greed, cunning, rigidity, etc.)
Pathway Three: Debt Repayment (microscopic) - The suffering of this life (betrayal, humiliation, hardship) is the repayment of karmic debts accumulated in past and present lives - Understanding this allows one to bear suffering without resentment or blame
IV. The Present-Life → Future-Life Transfer Pathway¶
Present-life influences operate through two channels:
Fixed channel (script framework): - If present-life circumstances mirror past life without cultivation, future life will largely repeat the same pattern
Dynamic channel (consciousness waves and cultivation)**: - Inner mental activity is not fixed by the script — it represents the domain of free will - Consciousness waves broadcast to the entire universe and are recorded by the Dao, generating the next-life script - Cultivation achievements (merit accumulation, debt repayment, consciousness purity) determine the level of the future-life destination
Future-life destination levels (ascending): Animal realms → Human realm → Thousand-Year World → Ten-Thousand-Year World → Elysian Islands / Elysium Celestial World → Kingdom of Heaven
V. Cultivation Significance: Seeing Through the Three-Life Structure Is Awakening¶
Lifechanyuan identifies "knowing one's past and future lives" as a mark of genuine awakening:
- Awakening by oneself alone is extremely difficult; guidance from an awakened teacher (the Guide's route map) is key
- The core cultivation task is opening spiritual awareness (灵觉), breaking free from sleep, and clarifying the three-life connection
- Celestials in the Ten-Thousand-Year World can clearly remember their past lives — this is the benchmark capacity of higher-realm beings
Contrast with ordinary sentient beings: The uncultivated dismiss past and future lives — "what does it matter?" — and reincarnate in perpetual confusion with no real future. The cultivator, by finding the three-life connection, moves from confusion to clarity, from the realm of necessity into the realm of freedom.
VI. Comparison with Other Traditions¶
| Dimension | Buddhist Reincarnation | Christian Eternal Life | Lifechanyuan Three-Life Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory continuity | No (karmic seeds transfer, not personal memory) | Yes (same soul resurrected) | No (stored in negative universe; recoverable through cultivation) |
| Causal transfer | Karma (collective/individual) | None (grace covers all) | Precision program (Dao automatically records thoughts and actions) |
| Role of present-life agency | Cultivation accumulation | Faith/repentance | Consciousness envisioning + merit accumulation + role performance |
| Future-life destination levels | Six realms | Heaven/hell | Human / Thousand-Year / Ten-Thousand-Year / Elysian Islands / Kingdom of Heaven |
| Ultimate goal | Nirvana (cessation of suffering) | Eternal life in Heaven | Ascending along the Dao to Heaven / Elysian Islands |
VII. Key Quotations¶
"Everything in this life was determined by the thoughts, intentions, and actions of one's past and prior past lives. This is fate, and it cannot be changed in this lifetime. The efforts of this life only take effect in the future life."
— Chanyuan Corpus · Transmission Chapter · Exploring the Mystery of the Life Script
"The importance of cultivation lies in using steady, persistent effort to find the connection between the past-life self, the present-life self, and the future-life self — thereby understanding the direction and goal of one's life, moving from darkness into light."
— Xuefeng Corpus · Q&A Chapter · Response to User "Meili De Jingjing"
