I. Definition and Cultivation Status¶
Among the countless methods of cultivation and refinement, releasing worldly bonds and cultivating celestial bonds is one of the most important gateways on the path to celestial being-hood.
There is no love without cause, no hatred without cause, no coming without cause, no going without cause. This tells us clearly: in cultivation, we must do everything we can to release all worldly and mundane bonds, while actively cultivating bonds with the celestial realms of Heaven. II. The Mechanics of Bonds¶
Bonds are universal: every encounter is bond-based. Every meeting is a bond coming to fruition; every parting is a bond running its course. "Those with bond meet across a thousand miles; those without bond stand face to face and never meet." A bond, once formed, crosses every distance β the Thousand-Year World, the Ten-Thousand-Year World, the Elysium World, the animal realm, the underworld, the frozen realm β this bond cannot be broken; it must be resolved.
All those we encounter β parents, children, friends, colleagues, neighbors, enemies β are encounters of causes and conditions. Nothing appears in one's life without prior karmic connection. III. Worldly Bonds as LIFE's Gravitational Field¶

IV. The Two Levels of Bond-Releasing and Their Methods¶
Releasing worldly bonds and cultivating celestial bonds proceeds along two main tracks: first, releasing bonds with worldly people; second, releasing bonds with the human world itself β while simultaneously doing everything possible to build connections with celestial beings, Buddhas, and people who carry celestial roots, and working to reorient consciousness away from the human world and toward the celestial realms.
Releasing bonds with worldly people is primarily about clearing what one owes them. As Jesus taught: as long as you owe a single coin's worth of debt, you cannot leave that place. Debt must be repaid. If it cannot be repaid in this life, it continues into the next life, and the life after that. As long as we owe debts to worldly people and to the human world, we cannot leave the human plane β we must reincarnate to repay them. The more debt we carry, the lower our LIFE level, and the smaller our chance of reaching the celestial realms.
Honoring parents, raising children, caring for siblings and relatives, contributing to society β all of these are debt repayment, aimed at releasing worldly bonds so that we do not have to reincarnate again into the human world of suffering and tribulation.
"Rather let others be indebted to me than owe anyone anything myself" β this is the master guideline of cultivation. Never seek advantage; give more than you receive. Not only does this settle debts β it builds treasure in Heaven.
As much as possible, avoid deep entanglement with those living entirely worldly lives. Do not extend goodwill to them β and do not extend ill will either. Accept no favors or advantages from worldly people, because worldly benefits are never truly beneficial β they are obstacles on the path to Heaven. So: if you are a doctor, never accept extra gifts from patients. If you are a government official, never accept payments beyond your proper salary, and never accept bribes. Do not let short-term gains cover your spiritual sight and plant the seeds of future suffering.
The logic is clear: if you form a deep bond with someone who does wrong, their troubles reach you. If they go to prison, you are entangled in it. If they descend to hell, you may have to go there to resolve the bond.
"Those near red are stained red; those near ink are stained black; worship a Buddha and you acquire Buddha-nature; worship a demon and you acquire demon-nature." Understand this early, and separate yourself from harmful places and harmful people before it is too late.
Releasing bonds and the best method for doing it: formless giving, building merit broadly. With enough merit in the Tao's bank, the Tao automatically handles settlement on your behalf. You need not repay debt A directly to creditor A β giving selflessly to B, C, D will clear it. Your parents are gone and you never adequately repaid them? V. Releasing Worldly Bonds and the Second Home¶
The Second Home is Heaven's life-program enacted in the human world. Being able to live in the Second Home, harmoniously and freely integrated into its rhythms, indicates one has already approached the standard of Heaven's LIFE quality β one foot has already crossed into Heaven. VI. Cultivating Celestial Bonds β The Counterpart¶
Actively cultivating celestial bonds means doing everything possible to build connections with people who have celestial or Buddha-nature roots. These people bring not trouble and harm but joy and happiness into our lives. "When one person attains the Tao, even the chickens and dogs rise to Heaven" β this is not entirely accurate, but it is certain that if we build deep bonds with them and they reach Heaven, we have a real chance of following, because a bond, once formed, necessarily draws you toward where the other is.
Connections among Chanyuan Celestials are connections among those cultivating celestial bonds. If ten people you have deeply bonded with attain celestial being-hood, the force of those bonds gives you a real chance of joining them in the celestial realms.
