I. The Basic Principle of Sound Waves¶
Sound waves have frequencies; different frequencies carry different energies; different energies affect the world and LIFE in different ways. Every sound will have an effect on the world and on LIFE — either a beneficial effect or a harmful one.
Two people quarreling: the sounds they make have a harmful effect. Two people speaking tender words: the sounds have a beneficial effect.
Every sound has its own wavelength and frequency band — its sound wave. Different sound waves have different values and functions. II. The Guanyin Heart Mantra and the Pronunciation of "Amitabha"¶
The Guanyin Heart Mantra — Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ — carries a wondrous sound wave with the power to elevate truth, goodness, and beauty and to suppress falsehood, evil, and ugliness. Reciting it regularly benefits the elevation of LIFE.
When chanting "Amitābha" (阿弥陀佛), if the character 阿 is pronounced as ā, the harm is boundless; if pronounced as ē, the benefit is boundless. Why? Because the sound waves of ā and ē are different — different sound waves carry different energies, with different natures, functions, and effects.
Every time I hear someone pronounce Amitābha as ā-Mituofo, my heart is distressed, very distressed — I feel as though I have fallen into a dark abyss. But when I hear someone say ē-Mituofo, joy arises in my heart — the mind becomes calm and emotions stable, and it feels as though I have entered the Kingdom of Heaven. III. Historical and Literary Evidence of Sound's Power¶
Everyone knows the story of Meng Jiangnu weeping at the Great Wall. How powerful was her weeping? It is said: "She wept until the sun and moon lost their light, the sky darkened and the earth grew dim; she wept until the autumn wind moaned and the sea surged in waves; the Great Wall collapsed section by section — eight hundred li in all." This is literary exaggeration, of course — yet the sound waves of Meng Jiangnu's weeping have continued to resonate through the skies of history, directly influencing people today.
The story of Dou E's Injustice is also well known: wrongly condemned, Dou E swore that snow would fall in June and a great drought would strike for three years — and both oaths came true.
The story of the Walls of Jericho is well known to Christians: after the Israelites circled the city for seven days, on the seventh day the priests sounded their trumpets and the people all shouted together — and the walls of Jericho collapsed under the trumpet blasts and the shouting.
It is said that the multi-ton stones used to build the Egyptian pyramids were not dragged up by human labor or mechanical equipment, but that a certain incantation was placed beneath each stone, and when someone chanted the incantation, the stone floated upward, and the floating stone was guided by the chanter's intention into its precise position in the wall. IV. The Chladni Figures — Scientific Verification¶
Many people know the "Chladni figures" from the history of science. The German physicist Ernst Chladni placed a wide, thin metal plate on a violin, spread fine sand evenly over it, and then drew a bow across the violin. The sand on the metal plate arranged itself into a beautiful pattern; as the pitch and frequency of the music changed, the beautiful patterns continuously shifted form, producing an endless variety of figures.
The Chladni figures prove that sound waves cause changes in surrounding matter — they can make snow fall in June, cause walls to collapse, bring torrential rains and floods, turn a region into a desert, and make hailstones the size of soccer balls. V. Sound Wave Energy and LIFE¶
LIFE needs to absorb powerful energy to sustain vigorous vitality — the more powerful the energy, the more vigorous the LIFE. Sound wave energy is a form of LIFE energy that cannot be neglected.
Sound waves that promote joy, calm, ease, and spiritual invigoration are beneficial sound wave energy — for example: beautiful singing and melodies, a lover's whispered words, the calm speech of a sage, birdsong. Sound waves that promote anxiety, frustration, worry, and diminished spirit are harmful energy — for example: another person's endless complaints, hoarse shouting, the angry voices of quarrelers, the cawing of a crow. VI. The Two-Way Effect and the General Principle¶
Positive, active, optimistic, romantic, musical sound waves benefit LIFE; negative, passive, pessimistic, mundane, noisy sound waves harm LIFE. This applies not only to others but to oneself as well — that is, when a person curses someone, they harm the other person and harm themselves simultaneously.
