I. Definition and Essence

1.1 The Core Proposition

Real images emerge from your spirit. Becoming celestial requires the purity of the spirit. Mind-image thinking is the activity of the spirit, and the result of this activity is the secret of becoming celestial.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Cultivation of Celestials · The Spirit Manifests Reality)

The existence of phenomena is the result of the interplay between structure, consciousness, and energy. Among these, consciousness plays an extremely important role, and the spirit is the primary component of consciousness. The environment in which a person exists is directly related to the state of their spirit: the purer and more beautiful the spirit, the higher the frequency of thought, and the more beautiful the space of life — this is the fundamental principle by which a person can become celestial.

1.2 Definition of Mind-Image Thinking

Mind-image thinking is using consciousness to create reality. The phenomena of the world are endlessly varied and dazzling. If one becomes absorbed in mere phenomena, one will wander in confusion forever, never escaping the labyrinth that phenomena create. We must rise above this labyrinth and survey it from a higher vantage point.

Circumstances are created by the mind; consciousness creates reality — this is a fact.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Heavenly Revelation · Mind-Image Thinking)

1.3 Definition of Mind-Image

A mind-image is a vivid picture of a future reality that arises through unconscious mental activity — a scene so real you can place yourself inside it. Mind-images belong to the nonmaterial realm, but years or decades later, when you find yourself physically in that scene, the image has become material reality.

One might say a mind-image is an imagined vision, yet remarkably, that vision will in due time be realized in the material world, becoming actual lived environment.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Cultivation Practice · Intermediate Cultivation)

A mind-image is not a fantasy, daydream, or delusion. It is the spontaneous, irresistible picture that arises in the mind when one is in a state of peaceful tranquility, free from material desire — a mind-image that emerges from a state of no-self and no-object. It does not arise when one is busy, anxious, exhausted, or full of craving.

II. The Mechanism — Cooperation of Nonmaterial Energy

2.1 The Universe Cooperates with Mind-Images

The universe does not distinguish between the good and the wicked. As long as you have formed a mind-image or offered a sincere prayer, the universe will do everything in its power, following the path of least resistance, to help you realize your wish as quickly as possible.

(New Era Human 800 Concepts, 4th Edition · Concept 333)

2.2 The Focusing Power of a Pure Spirit

Illness arises from the mind; circumstances are created by the mind. A pure spirit has the power to focus energy, just as a single small lens reflects little light — yet when many small lenses converge on a single point, the reflected energy can ignite wood and boil water. This is the principle of the solar cooker.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Cultivation of Celestials · The Spirit Manifests Reality)

2.3 Nonmaterial Energy Is Neutral and Impartial

Thought must be clear. One cannot send negative or confused signals to the nonmaterial energy field. Energy is neutral — anyone can use nonmaterial energy through thought, just as water flows for whoever turns on the tap. But if your thinking is chaotic, the nonmaterial energy can only return a chaotic life to you.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Heavenly Revelation · Mind-Image Thinking)

2.4 A Perfect Spirit Connects with the Universe

A perfect spirit allows your thoughts and consciousness to merge with the consciousness of the nonmaterial universe: you become the universe and the universe becomes you. Spiritual radiance shines at every moment; heaven and humanity are united; you can mobilize the energy of the nonmaterial universe in your service. In this state, what you seek and wish for is quickly fulfilled — mind-images are realized, and what two decades of ordinary labor cannot achieve, two hours of quiet sitting can accomplish.

III. Cultivation Practice

3.1 The Time Required for a Mind-Image to Manifest

A beautiful mind-image generally takes around eight years to become reality, sometimes longer. But regardless of how long it takes, once a mind-image is fixed — not interfered with by the self, not casually altered — it will eventually be realized.

(Tour Guide's Other Writings · 2007 · Guidance for Refining the Third Gem)

The purer and more wholesome the spirit, the more the mind-image accords with the laws of the Tao, and the greater the likelihood of realization — and the shorter the time required.

(Tour Guide's Other Writings · 2007 · Guidance for Refining the Third Gem)

A mind-image may seem like a vision, but it is absolutely a reality that transcends time and space. As cultivation deepens, it will arise naturally. Once it appears, that is your future. However you struggle or strive, the nonmaterial universe will carry you to the place shown in your mind-image.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Cultivation Practice · Intermediate Cultivation)

3.2 How to Practice

The skillful approach is to first quiet the mind, then in a state of stillness, begin to imagine — to build in your heart the scene you wish to realize. The clearer the inner image, the better. Once you have anchored this mind-image in your consciousness, the nonmaterial universe will mobilize everything — including yourself — to help you achieve it. Only time is needed.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Heavenly Revelation · Mind-Image Thinking)

Concept first, supported by action — the thing will be accomplished. "Sincerity moves even metal and stone."

(Tour Guide's Other Writings · 2020 · Exploring Pathways to Canada)

Intermediate cultivation means, building on the foundation of elementary cultivation, creating a brand-new life trajectory through reverence for the Greatest Creator, understanding the Tao, and recognizing the Buddha — transcending the mundane while engaged with it, reaching the state of no-self and no-object, living by mind-images.

IV. Classic Stories and Examples

4.1 The Sculptor and the Celestial Woman

A sculptor devoted himself to carving a life-sized statue of a supremely beautiful woman, crafting her entirely from the image in his heart. From the moment that inner image took shape, he was captivated by the woman within. He conversed with the celestial woman of his heart; in imagination he shared joy with his beloved. During the carving, he concentrated wholly — all his vitality, breath, spirit, heart, and intention were poured into the statue. When the final chisel blow was complete, the statue came to life. Strictly speaking, the stone remained stone — but the woman's nonmaterial form emerged from the statue and entered a bond with the sculptor that would last through all lifetimes, ultimately achieving the fruit of celestialhood.

4.2 The Divine Painter and the Cranes

There was a divine painter, renowned for painting celestial cranes. One day, before a crowd of onlookers, he painted cranes on a wall. Each crane he painted rose into the air and flew away. No matter how many he painted, every crane he put on the wall lifted off and soared.

This is a clumsy method, crude and elementary. The highest approach is the method of the spirit.

The sculptor animated his statue; the divine painter's cranes took flight. Both were the power of the spirit at work.

V. Obstacles and Warnings

5.1 Do Not Imagine Bad Outcomes

Never imagine bad things — for instance, picturing a plane crash before a flight, imagining failure before going to handle something, or picturing harm befalling a loved one. When such thoughts arise in the mind, deny them immediately and decisively. Say "No!" within your heart.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Heavenly Revelation · Mind-Image Thinking)

5.2 Confused Thinking Blocks Realization

Only clear consciousness can produce clear reality. Confused consciousness can only produce a confused life.

(Tour Guide's Other Writings · 2017 · Concept First, Then Find Ways to Make It Real)

VI. The Ultimate Destination — The Secret of Becoming Celestial

For those who have not undergone cultivation of thought and mind-images, celestial transformation seems absurd. But as consciousness rises, the frequency of thought increases, the spirit is progressively purified, and understanding of the nonmaterial world deepens — becoming celestial follows naturally, as a ripe fruit falls from the tree.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Cultivation of Celestials · The Spirit Manifests Reality)

Celestials operate through mind-image thinking. The highest level of thinking is Hundun thinking — the thinking of the Greatest Creator. Sakyamuni Buddha reached the level of formless thinking; Laozi reached the level of Taiji thinking; celestials operate through mind-image thinking; Zhuge Liang and Einstein reached associative thinking; artists like Beethoven reached imagery thinking; ordinary people think in material terms; the religious operate in illusory thinking.

(New Era Human 800 Concepts, 4th Edition · Concept 666)

VII. Connection to the New Era and Cosmic System

A pure spirit's power is immeasurably great. The purer the spirit, the more powerfully it can mobilize all factors in service of one's ideal. This accords with the Chanyuan principle: "Only by relinquishing the self can the self be fulfilled; only by being selfless can one's own purpose be served."
