Three Cosmic Elements (Academic Version)¶
Abstract¶
The Three Cosmic Elements — Consciousness, Structure, and Energy — constitute the foundational ontological thesis of Lifechanyuan cosmology, systematically formulated by Xuefeng in the early 2000s. This framework reduces all existence to three basic elements and articulates their generative logic: chaotic energy organizes into ordered structure, structure generates consciousness, and consciousness in turn creates new structures that attract corresponding energy, forming a self-sustaining cosmological cycle. Relative to Western philosophical dualism (matter vs. spirit) and modern physics (matter-energy equivalence), Lifechanyuan's framework makes two distinctive claims: (1) consciousness occupies the highest ontological tier rather than being derived from matter; (2) "structure" encompasses both physical structure and the antimatter structure of life, bridging the visible and invisible dimensions of reality.

I. Conceptual Positioning¶
The Three Cosmic Elements operate at the ontological level within Lifechanyuan's system, answering "what is the universe made of?" This is not a cultivation technique but a meta-framework for understanding all existence. Xuefeng states that the three elements "contain the entirety of humanity's wisdom across millennia," subsuming both religious traditions (Christ, Buddha, the prophets) and modern science — noting that Prigogine's dissipative structure theory "never goes beyond" this framework.
II. Definitions and Analysis¶
2.1 Structure¶
- Physical level: The organizational form of matter; determines the nature and function of all things (sugar is sweet, tea is bitter, each by virtue of its structure)
- Life level: The antimatter structure, which determines life's form, rank, and quality of consciousness
- Key principle: Energy is formless until it adheres to structure; every structure attracts its corresponding energy
Structure is the observable source of difference among all things and the primary object of transformation through spiritual cultivation. Perfecting the inner (antimatter) structure is the essential mechanism of ascending to higher realms.
2.2 Consciousness¶
- Origin: Arises from antimatter structure; born when chaotic energy organizes into ordered form
- Hierarchy: The universe's supreme consciousness is the Greatest Creator; individual human consciousness is a component of that cosmic consciousness
- Status: Consciousness is the creator of structure — "all doctrines converge at one root, all teachings unite at one origin, and that one is consciousness"
- Nature: Belongs to the antimatter realm; invisible to physical eyes; expressed through structure's "form" and "function"
2.3 Energy¶
- Scope: Everything except consciousness and structure is energy; both matter and antimatter are forms of energy
- Neutrality: Energy carries no intrinsic moral valence; celestials and demons alike draw upon it
- Conservation: Total cosmic energy equals zero (positive + negative), consistent with the Taiji principle
- Types: Physical energy (light, heat, electricity, magnetism, etc.), mental/spiritual energy, and soul energy
III. Generative Logic of the Three Elements¶
The three elements are not co-equal parallels but follow an inner generative sequence:
Cosmological origin path (bottom-up):
Chaotic energy → [Self-organization] → Ordered structure emerges → Structure generates consciousness
Cultivation and creation path (top-down):
Consciousness sets intention → Structure forms → Corresponding energy gathers automatically
This bidirectionality is central: the universe came into being through the first path; spiritual practice and intentional creation follow the second. "Consciousness goes first" (yishi xianxing) is the practical application.
IV. Comparative Analysis¶
| Dimension | Lifechanyuan | Materialism | Idealism | Modern Physics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic elements | Consciousness, Structure, Energy | Matter | Spirit / Mind | Matter, Energy (E=mc²) |
| Status of consciousness | Highest (Greatest Creator = consciousness) | Derived from matter | Foundational | Emergent from material processes |
| Nature of energy | Neutral; gathers per structure | Physical quantity | — | Physical quantity |
| Role of structure | Determinative (essence of life) | Form | — | Material organization |
| Cosmological origin | Structure → consciousness → Greatest Creator | Natural evolution | Spirit creates | Big Bang · quantum fluctuation |
Lifechanyuan's distinctive contribution is twofold: consciousness is simultaneously the universe's ultimate sovereign and something an individual can elevate through practice; "structure" as antimatter structure bridges physical and metaphysical dimensions in a way that neither pure materialism nor pure idealism provides.
V. Implications for Cultivation¶
The Three Cosmic Elements are not merely cosmological theory — they directly guide practice:
- Core cultivation goal: Perfect consciousness and the antimatter structure of life
- Secondary status of energy: Accumulating energy cannot change the quality of life; the distinction between a mortal and a celestial lies in consciousness and structure, not in energy reserves
- Basis of heart-image thinking: Consciousness first → structure forms → energy arrives — this is the ontological foundation of xinxiang (heart-image) practice
- Spiritual eye and three elements: Grasping the three-element relationship opens the spiritual eye and immunizes one against confusion by any doctrine
VI. Relationships to Other Core Concepts¶
- Hundun Ontology: The Hundun system constituted by the three cosmic elements is the Tao of the Greatest Creator
- Antimatter Structure: The life-specific expression of the structure element
- Raise Vibration Frequency: Higher frequency = more perfect consciousness + more complete structure — a dynamic rendering of the three-element relationship
- Cosmic Holography: The three elements expressed through the holographic principle
