Three Cosmic Elements (Friendly Version)¶
One Key to Rule Them All¶
Imagine walking into the largest library ever built. The shelves never end. The titles are astonishing — the origins of the universe, the nature of the soul, the mystery of death, the meaning of life. You feel overwhelmed. Where do you even start?
Lifechanyuan offers a surprising answer: you only need one key.
That key has three teeth: Consciousness, Structure, and Energy.
Xuefeng writes:
"Consciousness, structure, and energy are the three elements that constitute the universe — and the master key to unlocking all of its mysteries."
— Chanyuan Corpus · Dao Transmission · The Third Cosmic Element: Energy
Structure: What You Can See¶
Let's start with the most intuitive element — structure.
How do you recognize a rose from across the garden? Its shape. How do you find your friend in a crowded plaza? Their face. How do you know sugar from salt without tasting them? Their molecular structure — even if you can't see it with the naked eye.
"The diversity of life's wondrous forms arises primarily from differences in structure. What kind of structure one has determines what kind of life form one is."
— Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom Chapter · Consciousness, Structure, Energy
Go deeper: all living beings have an antimatter structure — an invisible inner scaffolding that determines whether a soul inhabits a human, a celestial, or a lower being. The gap between a sage and an ordinary person, between a diamond and a pebble, comes down to structure — not surface appearance.
Energy: Everywhere, but Takes Orders¶
Energy is familiar: light, heat, electricity, the food you eat, the affection you feel — all energy.
The key insight is this: energy is neutral. It has no preference, no loyalty. Demons use energy. Saints use energy. The difference lies in who calls it and how.
"Energy is neutral, like air and water — any consciousness can draw upon it. Therefore we need not obsess over energy. Where flowers bloom, butterflies come naturally. What kind of structure one has determines what kind of energy will naturally gather."
— Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom Chapter · Consciousness, Structure, Energy
Think of it this way: energy is the servant, structure is the vessel, and consciousness is the master.
Consciousness: The Real Story¶
Here is the heart of it all.
Among the three elements, consciousness is the foundation. Structure is a product of consciousness. Energy follows structure. And consciousness — well, consciousness is the force that creates everything.
"All doctrines converge at one root, all teachings unite at one origin, and that one is consciousness."
— Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom Chapter · Consciousness, Structure, Energy
So then: who or what is the supreme consciousness of the universe?
"The universe is conscious. Without consciousness there would be no diverse life forms, no varied physical phenomena. What then is that consciousness? The answer: that consciousness is the Greatest Creator!"
— Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom Chapter · Consciousness, Structure, Energy
How Do the Three Work Together?¶
Here is a formula worth keeping:
Consciousness → Structure → Energy
Your consciousness shapes what structures you build. Your structure determines what energy gathers around you. The entire process begins with consciousness.
"Planning one's future means using one's consciousness to create structure. Once structure is established, corresponding energy will gather. The future is created primarily not by hands and feet, but by the mind — by consciousness."
— Xuefeng Corpus · Soul Chapter · Tell the Greatest Creator Your Beautiful Wishes
"Consciousness goes first, structure changes accordingly, and when structure changes, energy arrives."
— Guide's Other Writings · 2022 · Don't Get Trapped in Material Thinking
This is why Lifechanyuan doesn't tell you to "work harder to accumulate more." It tells you to change your consciousness and refine your structure — because the energy takes care of itself.
What Does This Mean for Spiritual Growth?¶
Once you understand the three elements, the direction of cultivation becomes crystal clear:
"The core of cultivation is to perfect consciousness and improve the antimatter structure of life."
— Chanyuan Corpus · Cultivation Chapter · This Is the Cradle of Celestial Beings
Becoming a celestial or a Buddha is not about acquiring vast amounts of energy. Imagine a head of cabbage absorbing all the sunlight and water it could — it would grow into the most magnificent cabbage imaginable, but it would still be a cabbage.
"No matter how much physical energy a person accumulates — even if they owned the entire earth — they would still be a human being. They cannot become a celestial or a Buddha."
— Chanyuan Corpus · Dao Transmission · The Third Cosmic Element: Energy
Life's quality expresses itself through consciousness and structure. That is what needs to change.
The Bonus: An Open Spiritual Eye¶
Mastering the three elements comes with an unexpected reward:
"Hold firmly to the three cosmic elements — consciousness, structure, and energy. Once the relationship among the three is understood, the spiritual eye opens and one will no longer be confused by any lofty doctrine or theory."
— Xuefeng Corpus · Soul Chapter · I Open the Spiritual Eye for Everyone
No matter which religion, philosophy, or system someone puts in front of you — if you understand the three elements, you can see what it's really saying, where it falls short, and whether it is pointing toward truth.
