Soul Wealth · Spiritual Wealth · Material Wealth (Friendly Version)

Material wealth makes a base soul more base, and a noble soul more noble — but material wealth itself cannot save a person's soul. What saves a person's soul is soul wealth and spiritual wealth.

— Xuefeng Corpus · Heart-Mind · Material Wealth Cannot Save the Soul

A Plant Analogy

Imagine a peony.

Its roots, buried deep in the earth, are the foundation of its life — this is soul wealth.

Its stems, branches, leaves, and blossoms, stretching vigorously toward sunlight — this is spiritual wealth.

The sunlight, water, and nutrients it needs every day — this is material wealth.

All three are essential: without nutrients the flowers wither; without branches the roots have nowhere to extend; without roots, no amount of sunlight or water will produce a true peony.

What Are the Three Forms of Wealth?

Material wealth is the tangible things our bodies need to survive — food, clothing, shelter, money.

But don't forget: blue skies, white clouds, clean air, green mountains, and clear rivers are also material wealth. A person living in the mountains, with no bank savings, bathed in sunlight every day and surrounded by birdsong and streams — is actually very rich.

Spiritual wealth is what fills our inner life and brings us joy — family love, friendship, romance, knowledge, wisdom, care and love for others. The broader one's affection, the deeper one's love, the richer the spiritual wealth.

Soul wealth is the deepest layer — whether one's innate nature (the Tathāgata nature within) can radiate freely; whether one has faith and conviction; whether one has truly understood the Greatest Creator and the Tao; whether a divine lantern has been lit deep inside. A person rich in soul wealth has a clear mind, lives with genuine understanding, is never lost, and never in despair.

Why Does Soul Wealth Come First?

Soul wealth determines your capacity for happiness.

Look at how many lottery winners end up miserable: a 19-year-old British man won £10 million, but eight years later was back to working as a garbage collector — he had spent everything on drugs, gambling, and worse. An Australian man won 10 million Australian dollars, invested it all badly, lost everything, and his wife divorced him.

Money given to a base soul only accelerates its fall. Money given to a noble soul allows that soul to become even more beautiful.

Genuine happiness has little to do with how much money you have. It has somewhat more to do with how many friends you have. But above all, it has everything to do with whether your soul wealth is abundant.

A happy life belongs only to those whose soul wealth is abundant. People who are poor in soul wealth will never live a happy life; throughout their lives they will struggle and sink in a boundless ocean of sorrow.

Three Imbalanced Lives

A person who only pursues material wealth, with poor spiritual and soul wealth, is like a walking corpse — alive, but unable to feel real meaning.

A person who only pursues spiritual wealth (knowledge, emotions), with poor material and soul wealth, is like a ghostly apparition — energetic yet ungrounded.

A person who only pursues soul wealth (religious devotion), with poor material and spiritual wealth, is like a demonic aberration — liable to become fanatical and detached from reality.

Three pillars, three wholes — only then is life truly complete.

The Three Forms Support Each Other

The good news is: the richer your soul wealth, the more spiritual wealth naturally follows; the richer your spiritual wealth, the more material wealth naturally follows.

Going the other direction: material wealth supports spiritual wealth, and spiritual wealth supports soul wealth.

So the right path is: cultivate with soul wealth as your center. Without deliberately chasing material things, they naturally come to you.

When you possess abundant material, spiritual, and soul wealth, you will find that you have already transcended the ordinary. You are no longer bound by mortal flesh and blood. You are already qualified to journey to the Kingdom of Heaven.

How Do You Acquire Each Form of Wealth?

To gain spiritual wealth (affection and love): First cultivate excellent qualities and develop rich inner substance. Only then can you attract and receive abundant affection and love.

To gain soul wealth (the radiance of innate nature): You must have correct faith and firm conviction, a deep understanding of life, LIFE, and time-space, and a correct outlook on life and the world.

In simple terms: purify your soul, and align yourself with truth, goodness, beauty, love, faith, and sincerity.

Spiritual and Soul Wealth Are the Treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven

Spiritual wealth and soul wealth are the treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who possess the treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven are worthy of enjoying a beautiful life; only those who have stored enough treasures in the Kingdom of Heaven have the qualification to extend their LIFE from the human world into the Kingdom of Heaven.
