The Material World, the Spiritual World, and the Soul World (Friendly Version)¶
Life has three worlds: the material world, the spiritual world, and the soul world. The material world is heavy; the spiritual world is light; the soul world is ethereal.
— Xue Feng, "Let Us Live in the Spiritual and Soul Worlds"
Which World Are You Living In?¶
Imagine three kinds of people.
The first kind wakes up every morning thinking: How do I make more money today? Is the rent covered? Do I have enough for the kids' school fees? What if I get sick? When will I finally afford a bigger apartment? Everything in their head revolves around these concerns. This person lives in the material world.
The second kind thinks about: Will today be enjoyable? Is there someone good to talk to? Can I do the things I love? They have people they care about, work they're passionate about, things that lift their spirit. This person lives in the spiritual world.
The third kind has moved beyond personal happiness. They aren't preoccupied with comfort or whether today was fun — they simply give themselves fully, joyfully, every day, feeling full, blissful, and light. This person lives in the soul world.
Xue Feng puts it this way:
A life spent in worry, pain, anxiety, sorrow, grief, fear, and dread dwells in the material world. A life spent in joy, happiness, freedom, and well-being dwells in the spiritual world. A life spent in bliss, elation, ease, and lightness dwells in the soul world.
What Each World Feels Like¶
Stripped to the essentials:
- Material world: exhausted — body, mind, and spirit all drained
- Spiritual world: at ease — a pervasive lightness
- Soul world: weightless — ethereal, unbounded
This isn't about geography. It's about where your consciousness lives. Wherever your attention habitually rests — that is your world.
Animals, Humans, Immortals — Each Has Its World¶
Life Chanyuan offers a sharp and clear mapping:
| Level of life | World |
|---|---|
| Animals | Material world |
| Humans (in their ideal state) | Spiritual world |
| Celestial immortals and buddhas | Soul world |
| The divine and the Greatest Creator | Primordial chaos world |
Here's the uncomfortable truth: most humans aren't actually living in the spiritual world. They're grinding through the material world alongside animals — consumed by food, money, status, and survival. The spiritual world is where human life is meant to be lived. Reaching it is already a profound achievement.
Broadly speaking: those who live in the material world rank as ordinary humans. Those in the spiritual world rank as terrestrial immortals. Those in the soul world rank as heavenly immortals and buddhas. If a person can escape the material world and live in the spiritual world, that is already magnificent — one can die with a smile.

What You Emphasize Is Where You Live¶
Here's the key: you can't avoid the material world entirely — you have a body, you need food and shelter. The question isn't whether you deal with material things. It's what your consciousness centers on.
If you center on material wealth, you are living in the material world. If you center on spiritual wealth, you are living in the spiritual world. If you center on soul wealth, you are living in the soul world.
— Xue Feng, "Let Us Live in the Spiritual and Soul Worlds"
And here's the counterintuitive surprise: people who stop obsessing over material acquisition often end up enjoying more material comfort than those who make it their life's pursuit. Why? Because when you're not driven by fear and scarcity, you become genuinely productive — and what you need tends to show up. "Only through selflessness does one truly gain."
The Outward Appearance of Inner Wealth¶
You might expect that someone "spiritually rich" would look impressive, polished, and grand. The opposite is usually true.
At the height of literary craft, there is no cleverness. At the height of character, there is only naturalness.
— Life Chanyuan Corpus, "Those Who Live in the Spiritual World Show These Signs"
People living in the spiritual world tend to shed the performance of wealth. They:
- Don't accumulate jewelry, luxury items, or expensive décor
- Don't go to upscale restaurants or expensive vacations to show off
- Don't flatter powerful people or envy celebrities
- Treat everyone equally — the cleaner and the CEO get the same respect
- Choose things for practicality and comfort, not appearance
- Would rather be alone than compromise their values
The less they display, the richer they are inside.
How to Move Into a Higher World¶
You don't need to become a monk or renounce everything.
The shift happens through where you direct your attention. When life in the material world feels suffocating — deliberately bring your mind into the spiritual world. When the spiritual world gets turbulent — step into the soul world.
The soul world is yours alone. It is "unrelated to other people, unrelated to external reality" — a space no one else can enter or damage. No prison, no poverty, no threat can touch it.
Whatever is unpleasant in the material and spiritual worlds — let it become an illusion. Whether you're starving, imprisoned, or facing a gun barrel — none of it can touch your freedom in the soul world. You can smile and say: "Go ahead — thank you for setting me free."
— Life Chanyuan Corpus, "Toward Immortality and Buddhahood: No More Adversity"
Wherever consciousness is, that is where you are. Your soul can live in heaven no matter where your body is.
A Real-Life Example¶
The Life Chanyuan Canada branch had five members in 2023. Total annual income: 100,000 Canadian dollars — about 20,000 per person. That's less than half the Canadian average.
Were they struggling? No. They lived with more ease, more joy, and more genuine quality of life than most Canadians earning twice that. In Vancouver, just the rent on a one-bedroom apartment runs close to what each of them earned in a month — yet they thrived.
Why? Because they lived in the spiritual world. Money wasn't the center of their consciousness. Connection, purpose, and shared life were. And those things, once found, don't require much money to sustain.
Ask Yourself¶
What am I most concerned about today?
- Food, money, status, other people's opinions → material world
- Happiness, friendship, freedom, being understood → spiritual world
- Giving, serving, creating without attachment to outcome → soul world
There's no shame in any answer. What matters is that you know where you stand — and that you know the higher worlds are reachable.
