The Material World, the Spiritual World, and the Soul World (Internal Reference)

Life has three worlds: the material world, the spiritual world, and the soul world. The material world is heavy; the spiritual world is light; the soul world is ethereal.

— Xue Feng, "Let Us Live in the Spiritual and Soul Worlds"

I. Definitions and Core Distinctions

1.1 Basic Definitions of the Three Worlds

Life has three worlds: the material world, the spiritual world, and the soul world.

The world in which one labors for food, clothing, shelter, transportation, birth, aging, sickness, and death — that is the material world. The world in which one strives for joy, happiness, freedom, and well-being — that is the spiritual world. The world in which one offers and devotes oneself unselfishly and joyfully for bliss, radiance, and glory — that is the soul world.

A person who is always rushing about for food and clothing, money, power, fame, and profit — that person lives in the material world.

A person who strives for happiness, joy, freedom, and well-being — that person lives in the spiritual world.

A person who gives and contributes selflessly with delight — that person lives in the soul world.

(Xue Feng, "Let Us Live in the Spiritual and Soul Worlds," 2017-4-5)

1.2 The Essential Difference Between Spirit and Soul

Spirit and soul are two different concepts. What they share is that both belong to the nonmaterial world and carry nonmaterial attributes. What distinguishes them is that spirit belongs to the domain of energy, while soul belongs to the domain of consciousness.

Expressions such as "full of vitality," "high spirits," "radiant energy," "spiritual vigor," and "low energy" all describe a state of energy — that is spirit.

Expressions such as "beautiful soul," "rich inner life," "dull soul," and "poor consciousness" all describe a state of consciousness — that is the soul.

The spiritual world is an energy world; the soul world is a consciousness world.

Things like friends, family, love, friendship, knowledge, wisdom, sages and immortals, heaven and hell, ghosts and spirits — these belong to the spiritual world.

Things like the Greatest Creator, the Tao, virtue, faith, belief, thought, and consciousness — these belong to the soul world.

A person with rich knowledge, deep relationships, great wisdom, and connection to sages has a rich spiritual world. A person who knows and reveres the Greatest Creator, understands the Tao, has virtue and faith, and embodies truth, goodness, beauty, love, faith, and sincerity — that person has a rich soul world.

Only when a person's material, spiritual, and soul worlds are all abundant — all three pillars standing — can life be called truly complete.

(Xue Feng, "The Spiritual World and the Soul World," 2009/10/31)

1.3 An Academic Clarification

Soul belongs to the domain of consciousness; spirit belongs to the domain of energy.

The three elements composing the universe are: consciousness, structure, and energy — hence "form is emptiness, emptiness is form."

Soul factors include: the Greatest Creator, morality, faith, goodness, and the virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and fidelity.

Spirit factors include: love, emotion (family, romantic, friendship), mentors, knowledge, wisdom, and capability.

A rich soul is like lighting a divine lamp within — the mind becomes clear, life becomes lucid, and one can discern the hierarchy of priorities, no longer lost, never despairing.

A rich spirit is like receiving an abundant charge of energy — vitality surges, aspirations soar, vigor radiates, and one is free of languor and sloth.

(Xue Feng, "Exchange with Dr. Chen Fu of National Taiwan Normal University on Soul and Spirit," 2010/3/31)

II. The Character of Each World

2.1 Weight, Tone, and Corresponding Life

The material world is heavy; the spiritual world is light; the soul world is ethereal.

Animals dwell in the material world; humans in the spiritual world; immortals, buddhas, and angels in the soul world.

A life spent in worry, pain, anxiety, sorrow, grief, fear, and dread dwells in the material world. A life spent in joy, happiness, freedom, and well-being dwells in the spiritual world. A life spent in bliss, elation, ease, and lightness dwells in the soul world.

No matter how one lives — if one lives in the material world, life is a tragedy. If in the spiritual world, a farce. If in the soul world, a comedy.

Material wealth supports spiritual wealth; spiritual wealth supports soul wealth. Soul wealth generates spiritual wealth; spiritual wealth generates material wealth.

As a human being with a physical body, it is impossible to avoid the material world entirely. One must attend to all three. But the emphasis determines which world one actually inhabits.

(Xue Feng, "Let Us Live in the Spiritual and Soul Worlds," 2017-4-5)

III. Life Levels and the Three Worlds

3.1 The Hierarchy of Life

Above the material world is the spiritual world; above that is the soul world; above that is the primordial chaos world. Whatever binds a life, that is the world it inhabits. Those bound by material things live in the material world; those bound by spiritual things live in the spiritual world; those bound by soul matters live in the soul world.

Humans live in the material world; immortals in the spiritual world; heavenly immortals and buddhas in the soul world; the divine and the Greatest Creator in the primordial chaos world.

(Life Chanyuan Corpus, Cultivation Chapter, "Escape the Material Cage and You Are Already an Immortal," 2024-04-11)

3.2 A Rough Classification of Life Grades

Broadly speaking: those who live in the material world rank as ordinary humans; those in the spiritual world rank as terrestrial immortals or human immortals; those in the soul world rank as heavenly immortals and buddhas; the primordial chaos world is beyond any human aspiration — that is the domain of the divine and the Greatest Creator.

If a person escapes the material world and lives in the spiritual world, that is already a magnificent achievement — one can die with a smile. To go further and live in the soul world is the fruit of centuries of cultivation, rare beyond measure — not one in a hundred, but one in ten thousand.

3.3 Correspondence with Buddhism's Three Realms

In Buddhist terms, the three realms are the realm of desire, the realm of form, and the formless realm. The conventional Buddhist reading places the formless realm in the domain of pure spirit — but that understanding has blind spots. It is actually the realm of form that corresponds to the spiritual world, while the formless realm corresponds to the soul world. Thus:

  • Realm of desire = material world
  • Realm of form = spiritual world
  • Formless realm = soul world

(Xue Feng, "Answering Xianzhe Cao: On 'Leaping Beyond the Three Realms,'" 2009/10/14)

IV. How to Know Which World You Inhabit

4.1 The Felt Sense

In the material world: one word — exhausted. Body, mind, and soul all exhausted.
In the spiritual world: two words — at ease.
In the soul world: one word — weightless.

4.2 Six Indicators of Dwelling in the Spiritual World

If you possess any one of the following, you have already entered the spiritual world:

  1. You carry someone — one person or a group — in your heart whom you trust completely to support you through any difficulty, who would meet your every reasonable need. Because of this trust, you maintain surging vitality and work joyfully each day, willingly sharing your creations with those you hold dear.

  2. You believe in cause and effect — that what you sow, you reap; that the cosmic net catches all; that all is just and in accord with the Tao. Therefore you remain calm before hardship and catastrophe, equanimous before gain and loss, unhurried, unafraid, and undisturbed.

  3. You now understand that human life is a journey, a dream that will wake — and you are no longer bound by house, car, money, parents, children, spouse, or status, knowing these are all dream images in a passing mirage.

  4. You see through history — emperors and billionaires, whole civilizations rising and falling — and recognize it all as a passing farce. Life is a stage, and you came only to see and play. Nothing is worth guarding with your life. You live freely, calmly, roamingly, happily.

  5. You know the mysteries of life and space-time — that after death there are places called the Thousand-Year World, the Ten-Thousand-Year World, the Elysium World, and the Celestial Islands — and you have set your life's target there. Fame, property, and worldly opinions no longer occupy your attention. Your entire being is oriented toward the celestial homeland.

  6. You hold an unwavering faith in the Greatest Creator — a faith so rich it would fill a book. Those who grasp it develop the seeds of primordial chaos thinking, from which they can roam not only the spiritual world but the boundless, blissful soul world.

V. Signs of Those Who Live in the Spiritual World

Inner fullness no longer needs outward display.

"At the height of literary craft, there is no cleverness; at the height of character, there is only naturalness." A person whose spiritual and soul wealth is abundant becomes increasingly plain and unassuming — all pretense falls away. The louder the display, the emptier the inner life.

Those who live in the spiritual world will not pursue or accept the following:

  1. No gold hoarding; no expensive jewelry or accessories.
  2. Women won't fuss over necklaces, handbags; men won't chase branded clothes, luxury cars, or designer watches.
  3. No spending on luxury goods whatsoever.
  4. No purchasing precious paintings or antiques.
  5. No globe-trotting tourism for show.
  6. No dining at upscale restaurants to impress.
  7. No lavish décor in the home.
  8. No flattering, envying, or praising the powerful and famous.

And they show the following positive traits:

  1. Everything is chosen for practicality: "Simple vessels clean and plain surpass gold and jade; simple food fresh and precise outshines rare delicacies."
  2. Everything chosen for comfort — appearance and luxury are irrelevant.
  3. Equal treatment for all; greater respect for elders and compassion for the weak.
  4. No judging people by wealth, status, kinship, or outcome.
  5. No comment without full knowledge of events; no judgment without knowing a person's heart; no emotional reaction based on power, status, or personal preference.
  6. Open-minded embrace of new ideas, theories, things, and models.
  7. Willingness to be alone rather than go along with the crowd.
  8. Preferring to read the "wordless book of heaven," seeking answers from the Greatest Creator whenever in doubt.

VI. The Path of Cultivation: Rising Through the Worlds

6.1 What "Escaping Material Bondage" Really Means

Material bondage is not material things literally shackling the mind. It is consciousness falling into the trap formed by material things — spending a whole life pursuing material wealth while utterly forgetting the elevation of life.

Escaping material bondage does not mean abandoning food, shelter, clothing, vehicles, tools, or money. It means one's thoughts, intentions, words, and actions are no longer driven by acquiring more material wealth — they orbit something more enduring.

Those who live in the spiritual world, paradoxically, often enjoy more material comfort than those who live in the material world. That is the secret: "Only through selflessness does one truly gain; only through self-transcendence does one truly become."

(Life Chanyuan Corpus, Cultivation Chapter, "Escape the Material Cage and You Are Already an Immortal," 2024-04-11)

6.2 Switching Worlds at Will

When the material world turns bleak — switch to the spiritual or soul world. When freedom is lost in the material — live into the spiritual and soul worlds. When the spiritual world itself is oppressive — step directly into the soul world, which is independent of others and untouched by reality, a space of boundless inner freedom. Whatever is unpleasant in the material and spiritual worlds becomes illusion. At that point — whether starving, imprisoned, or threatened at gunpoint — nothing can touch one's freedom in the soul world. One can smile and say: "Go ahead and shoot — thank you for setting me free."

(Life Chanyuan Corpus, Cultivation Chapter, "Toward Immortality and Buddhahood: No More Adversity," 2025-07-20)

6.3 Consciousness Transcends Space-Time

Wherever consciousness is, that is where you are. Consciousness in a dream — you are in the dream. Consciousness in heaven — you are in heaven.

Though the body is confined to a harsh physical world, the soul can transcend reality entirely and enter the paradise it longs for. Wherever you are, you can live in heaven.

The body cannot transcend space-time, but consciousness can — completely. Through the internet, people thousands of miles apart can meet in a single website. Through the soul world, they can meet at the Celestial Islands, billions of light-years away.

(Xue Feng, "Let the Soul Live in Heaven," 2014/8/20)

VII. The Cognitive Divide Between Worlds

Those whose consciousness has always lived in the material world cannot perceive the breadth and height of those who live in the spiritual or soul worlds. They will find such people absurd — foolish, even mad. Conversely, those in the spiritual and soul worlds see those locked in the material world as little different from insects and animals.

Both perceptions arise from the same root: having never traveled the other road.
