Trust (Academic Version)

Abstract

In the Lifechanyuan system, trust is not merely an interpersonal virtue but a concept with ontological status: a life-energy and the foundational stone of the highest form of human civilisation. Guide Xuefeng defines trust as "believing without a shadow of doubt" and further distinguishes two levels — ordinary trust and "Great Trust" (da xin 大信). The system's central theses are: selfishness is the chief obstacle to trust; selflessness is its prerequisite; and humanity's highest civilisation transcends contract-based law to rest on full mutual trust. Possessing 64 or more trustworthy and intimately close individuals is presented as the objective marker of one who is walking the road to Heaven.

I. Conceptual Definition

1.1 Core Definitions

Xuefeng offers the most compact operational definition:

"Believing without a shadow of doubt — that is trust." (Guide's Other Writings · 2023 · Believing Without Doubt Is Trust)

He also provides a semantic analysis:

"Trust: xin means to believe; ren means to entrust. Trust means believing in someone and entrusting one's future — even one's very life — to that person. Trust involves risk, but whatever the outcome, one harbours no regret, no resentment, no complaint." (Xuefeng Corpus · Admonition Chapter · The Collapse of Trust in Hezhou)

An operational definition of complete trust:

"Complete trust means: you are willing to let this person arrange your life; you are willing to bear any responsibility or obligation for them; you hand your wealth to them without the slightest hesitation; you tell them your innermost secrets without fearing they will ever use those secrets to harm you." (Chanyuan Corpus · Life Manual Chapter · A Beautiful Life Is Built of People You Trust)

II. Theoretical Levels: Trust and Great Trust

2.1 Ordinary Trust

Ordinary trust refers to a relational disposition to depend upon and entrust matters to another person. The Guide notes that in secular society, having even three to five people one can completely trust is already remarkable.

2.2 Great Trust (Da Xin)

Great Trust is trust's highest form and the core of Second Home's cultural programme:

"What is Great Trust? It means believing and trusting one hundred percent, without any doubt whatsoever — trusting what you understand, and trusting what you do not yet understand. Without Great Trust, we are water without a source and a tree without roots." (800 New-Era Concepts, 4th Edition · No. 578)

The three objects of Great Trust: (1) trust in the Greatest Creator-Buddha; (2) trust in historical saints (Jesus, Shakyamuni, Laozi, Muhammad, Mao Zedong); (3) trust in Guide Xuefeng.

2.3 The Spectrum: Sufficient Faith vs. Insufficient Faith

Xuefeng draws on the Tao Te Ching Chapter 17 — "When faith is insufficient, there will be unfaith" — to describe trust as a continuum: those with sufficient faith live perfectly and without regret; those with insufficient faith ultimately regret their lives. (Guide's Other Writings · 2020 · Insufficient Faith Begets Unfaith)

III. Functional Analysis

3.1 Energetic Function

"Trust is a vast invisible energy. As long as there is trust within the heart, one can survive any ordeal." (Xuefeng Corpus · Heart-Soul Chapter · Trust Is Honey, Distrust Is a Knife)

This is illustrated by the 1989 Los Angeles earthquake account, in which mutual trust between father and son enabled 14 children to survive 38 hours in rubble.

3.2 Civilisational Function

"Humanity's highest civilisation is built on full mutual trust. Once there is full trust between people, contracts, regulations, and laws become redundant, and life becomes lighter, freer, more at ease." (Guide's Other Writings · 2023 · Believing Without Doubt Is Trust)

This argument explicitly supersedes the Western contract-law paradigm, classifying it as a middle, not highest, form of civilisation.

3.3 Heavenward-Orientation Function

"When the number of people we can completely trust keeps growing, we are moving toward Heaven. Conversely, when the number keeps shrinking, we are moving toward Hell." (Chanyuan Corpus · Life Manual Chapter · A Beautiful Life Is Built of People You Trust)

"If you already have 64 people you can trust and feel close to, there is no doubt: you are walking the road to Heaven. Your life has already transformed into the life of a celestial being. Heaven is your certain destination." (Chanyuan Corpus · Becoming Celestial Chapter · Where to Find 64 Trustworthy and Intimate People)

IV. Conditions and Obstacles

4.1 Prerequisite: Selflessness

"Selfishness is the greatest obstacle to building trust between people ... A selfish person cannot be trusted, because a selfish person is unreliable." (Guide's Other Writings · 2023 · Believing Without Doubt Is Trust)

"Trust is the hallmark quality and the exclusive property of celestial life. Those who cannot achieve selflessness and egolessness will never have trust." (Xuefeng Corpus · Admonition Chapter · The Collapse of Trust in Hezhou)

4.2 Prerequisite: Purified Heart

"A person who has not had their heart purified, who has not been nurtured by the heavenly programme, cannot become someone worthy of trust and closeness ... you do not possess the quality or the frequency to be trusted and loved." (Chanyuan Corpus · Becoming Celestial Chapter · Where to Find 64 Trustworthy and Intimate People)

4.3 Prerequisite: Keeping One's Word

"Failing to keep one's word is a form of crime. To have a beautiful future, begin by keeping your word." (Guide's Other Writings · 2014 · Core Principles of Second Home Life, No. 62)
