Will and Determination · Internal Edition

Entry Overview

Will (意志, yìzhì) is a psychic energy concept in Lifechanyuan's system. Guide Xuefeng defines it through character analysis: "will" () means heartfelt wish; "determination" (zhì) is the mental and psychological state maintained in pursuit of that wish. Will is potential energy — it becomes kinetic energy only through action. Its strength is determined by the orderliness and clarity of one's consciousness, not by inborn temperament. The system's core distinction: will is energy, not structure. No matter how strong one's will, it cannot change LIFE's antimatter structure — only consciousness can do that. Yet without will as motivating force, consciousness is unlikely to transform, and the destination remains out of reach.

I. Definition: Wish, Determination, Will

The character "will" () means heartfelt wish; "determination" (zhì) means the mental and psychological state of realizing and attaining that wish.

For example: we want to eat a ginseng fruit. That wish, that desire, is . Once we have this , we find every means possible to obtain the fruit. That persistent mental and psychological state of "I will find a way" is zhì.

Will is the mental and psychological state that is born from a wish and maintained — held onto — in pursuit of realizing that wish. (Xuefeng Corpus · Soul · A Brief Discussion of Will and Its Relationship to Consciousness, Structure, and Energy, 2007/12/17)

II. The Nature of Will: Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy

Will is a form of potential energy — energy poised to act. When it is released through language, behavior, prayer, or heart-imagery, it transforms into kinetic energy. This is like a reservoir: will is the reservoir. When the water pours down from height and drives the turbine, or flows through the spillway, it becomes kinetic energy — an actual force. The magnitude of this energy is proportional to the reservoir's volume and the pressure generated by the height difference. III. What Determines the Strength of Will: Orderly, Clear Consciousness

Everyone has will. Some wills are strong; some are weak. The strength of will is determined by a person's consciousness: the more orderly and clear the consciousness, the stronger the will; the more chaotic and confused the consciousness, the weaker the will. (Xuefeng Corpus · Soul · A Brief Discussion of Will and Its Relationship to Consciousness, Structure, and Energy, 2007/12/17)

For example: we want to reach the Elysium World and the Celestial Islands Continent. That desire alone is just . The mental and psychological state of "I absolutely will get there" is zhì — that is our will. Whether this will can be sustained depends on its strength. If one's consciousness contains a fairly detailed understanding of the mysteries of cosmic time-space and LIFE — if one has a deep recognition of the value and meaning of life — then one's consciousness is orderly, one knows what to do and what not to do, what to think and what not to think: consciousness is clear. In this state, the will to reach the Celestial Islands is very strong. No matter how great the resistance or difficulty, one remains unmoved, steady throughout; no force can change one's resolve. That is strong will. If, however, one knows nothing about the universe, time, or space, knows nothing about what LIFE is, has no understanding of the principles of LIFE evolution — then consciousness is chaotic and disordered. One cannot know the value and meaning of life, cannot know what to think and what not to think, what to do and what not to do. One will fly about like a headless fly — living in confusion, achieving nothing. In this state, the will to reach the Celestial Islands is very weak. When things go smoothly, one may maintain it; but the moment the wind shifts and the rain falls, will collapses — sometimes completely. IV. The Critical Distinction: Will Cannot Change LIFE's Structure

Will is energy — potential energy. This energy is empty until action converts it into kinetic energy. The strength of will depends on the orderliness and clarity of consciousness. But will is not structure, and will cannot change structure. Like a peony: no matter how much water you give it or how much fertilizer you add, no matter how beautiful it blooms or how much it withers, it remains a peony. Its structure does not change because of the adequacy or inadequacy of water and nutrients. In the same way, a person cannot change LIFE's antimatter structure through the strength or weakness of will. The only factor that can change LIFE's structure is consciousness. Only when consciousness changes does LIFE's antimatter structure change. To become an Immortal, one must possess the conditions for becoming an Immortal. Without those conditions, no matter how many books about immortality you have read, no matter how much you have meditated and sat in Chan, no matter how many methods and techniques you have mastered, no matter how firm your conviction and how strong your will — you cannot become an Immortal. Soaking in a vat of dye, no matter how much you struggle, you will not come out white. A seed pressed against a wall, no matter how hard it tries, will not become a great tree. V. Will as the Engine of Cultivation: The Ship Analogy

Yet will is energy — and without this energy to support us, our consciousness is unlikely to transform, and we are unlikely to reach our destination. It is like a ship: no matter how fine the vessel, no matter how luxurious, if there is no engine, it can only sit forever in harbor. Will is the engine that drives the ship through wind and waves toward its distant destination. Tempering the will, establishing ideals, firming up faith, accumulating merit, seeking the Tao and becoming an Immortal — these are the great matters. Those who neglect these great matters spend their entire lives on trivialities. (Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom · Small Things and Great Things)

VI. Signs and Consequences of Weak Will

Some Chanyuan Celestials, after entering Lifechanyuan, did not use their heart to sense the mysteries of time, space, and LIFE, did not dwell on the value and meaning of life. Instead they observed, probed, watched which way the wind was blowing, sought special abilities, sought techniques, sought to display their own abilities and talents. And so, the moment they encountered setbacks, the moment they hit rough weather, they abandoned their original purpose. Worse, to prove the "correctness" of abandoning Lifechanyuan, they seized every opportunity to slander and attack it — searching for those who agreed with them, believing that the more people attacked Lifechanyuan, the more it would prove they were "right." In reality, this is vanity at work — a portrait of weak will. (Xuefeng Corpus · Soul · A Brief Discussion of Will and Its Relationship to Consciousness, Structure, and Energy, 2007/12/17)

Laziness is the greatest enemy of the Second Home (LIFE Oasis). Diligence symbolizes beauty; laziness represents ugliness! … Laziness can destroy everything. It causes people to sink. It corrodes the will, the spirit, the soul, and the body. It can bring down an entire diligent collective — like a virus infecting a community's spiritual health — until everything becomes listless and lifeless, desolate and ruined. You have a warm family and a comfortable, stable job. You feel that everything is fine, that moving forward is not that important — maybe even unnecessary. Your enthusiasm gradually cools; your willpower gradually wanes. Think: what is the value and meaning of life? Is precious human life really just for a warm family and comfortable work? (Xuefeng Corpus · On Aspiration · Don't Stop Moving Forward Until You Reach Your Goal)

VII. Strong Will as the Mark of an Immortal-Grade LIFE

Some Chanyuan Celestials, from the day they entered Lifechanyuan, have maintained the mental and spiritual state of "I am going to the Celestial Islands Continent" from beginning to end — no matter what has changed in the community, no matter how many people have attacked it, they remain unmoved. This shows their will is strong, their reservoir full, their consciousness orderly and clear. No force can shake their will. Place an atomic bomb at their feet — they would not flinch, their faces would not change, their hearts would not waver. In the face of hardship, we accept it with equanimity. Without hardship, how can will and faith be tempered? The skylark can only ascend to become a phoenix through fire. The silkworm must shed two skins to grow. Only through the self-enclosure of the cocoon comes the hope of the butterfly's flight. Hardship is a good thing, not a bad one.
