Belief and Faith (Xinyang) · Internal Reference

This version preserves complete source texts for deep study within the Lifecosmos system.

I. Definition and Nature

"Xin" means trustworthy, reliable, dependable. "Yang" means to look up to, revere, worship.

Belief is a complete value system that arises spontaneously within a person's consciousness when the heart is moved and shaken by some teaching, doctrine, phenomenon, or mysterious force.

Belief is a product of the heart, not of religion or any political party. Religion and political parties serve only as catalysts. Without religion or political parties, a person can still have belief.

Belief is an individual act of consciousness. Belief built through collective effort is difficult to sustain; belief built on collective conviction will dissolve along with whatever religion, party, or organization gave rise to it.

Belief is a kind of reverence and awe that arises deep in the human heart toward the supernatural — a reference system by which a person establishes moral standards and behavioral norms, and an invisible compass that spontaneously governs one's every thought, word, and action.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Essays · The Essential Distinction Among Belief, Religion, and Cult, 2014-12-16)

Belief is a compass rooted deep in the heart that guides a person's thoughts, behavior, and speech. It is the coordinate system for establishing correct values toward life and the world. It is the bond that sustains harmonious relationships between people, between people and society, and between people and nature.

Without belief, a person lives blindly — confused, disoriented, exhausted, getting priorities backwards. Without belief, a person is easily led into error and wrongdoing.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart Chapter · Establishing Belief for the Chinese Nation, 2014-11-2)

Belief is the human soul. Belief navigates human life. With belief there is a direction to travel; different beliefs produce different lives.

II. The Content and Classification of Belief

The content of belief is extraordinarily varied — Communist belief, heaven-humanity-unity belief, belief in the Greatest Creator, belief in the Buddha, belief in science; even obsession with power, status, money, reputation, and physical beauty is a form of belief. "Seize the day," "go through the motions," "muddle along" — these too are beliefs.

At their core, beliefs fall into two categories: theistic belief and atheistic belief.

Theistic believers are humble. They believe the Greatest Creator made all things, feel hope for the future, believe in karmic cycles, and constrain themselves through an inner court of moral conscience. They feel that "three feet above the head stands a divine judge," and so dare not act recklessly.

Atheistic believers trust in human willpower, science, and tangible evidence. They believe in evolution and that death is simply the permanent end — so they invest their energy and time in worldly success, status, and pleasure within this single lifetime.

III. The Eight Levels of Belief

Belief exists on a spectrum. From lowest to highest:

Level 1: Law of the Jungle. "Winners are kings; losers are criminals." "The ruthless prevail." "Survival of the fittest."

Level 2: Money and Power Above All. "Money is lord." Vision is fixed entirely on immediate material gain.

Level 3: Dignity and Character. "I will not eat food thrown at me in contempt." "A gentleman earns wealth by rightful means." "Do not impose on others what you yourself do not want."

Level 4: Loyalty and Filial Piety. The full Confucian moral system.

Level 5: Service to Family, Nation, Party, or Faith. The typical belief of ordinary people and political organizations.

Level 6: Unity of Heaven and Humanity. Taoist orientation — "cultivate yourself alone," "non-action," "freedom from desire."

Level 7: Theistic religion. Christianity, Buddhism, Islam.

Level 8: Lifecosmos belief — the highest. The core: walk the path of the Greatest Creator. This belief is built on the combined wisdom of Jesus, Sakyamuni, Muhammad, and Laozi, together with the fruits of science and the insights of humanity's greatest sages — a belief in which all rivers flow into the ocean. This is the highest level of belief, the summit of human wisdom.

Belief is antimatter. It is the navigator of the soul. Whatever belief you hold, that determines your life's outcome.

All humans have some belief. Without any belief, a person is no more than "straw dogs" — an animal.

IV. Belief, Religion, and Cult Distinguished

Belief belongs to the domain of the heart. Religion belongs to the domain of culture. Cults belong to the domain of organization.

Belief is personal. Religion is communal. A cult is organizational.

Belief reveres the supernatural. Religion reveres its clergy and doctrines. A cult reveres its founder.

Belief benefits the individual. Religion benefits the community. A cult benefits the organization.

The distinction between religion and cult: whatever benefits society is religion; whatever harms society is a cult.

To identify whether an organization is a cult, check two things only: whether it practices personality worship, and whether it causes harm to society. If neither is present, it is by nature not a cult. The judgment must be grounded in objective fact, not subjective opinion.

V. Belief Is Not About Numbers

No matter what 6.5 billion people believe, they believe what they believe and I believe what I believe. Belief cannot rest on the authority of the majority. Belief cannot be blind. Only belief built through one's own thinking and felt experience is truly stable. Chasing the crowd is called opportunism, not belief.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart Chapter · Belief Is Not About Numbers)

VI. Steadfast Belief Produces Steadfast Action

Beyond Mencius's maxim "those with stable property have stable hearts" lies a higher principle: those with steadfast belief have steadfast action.

For those with unshakeable belief, regardless of property, regardless of how difficult the road, they will advance persistently toward their chosen direction — this is steadfast action.

(Chanyuan Corpus · Wisdom Chapter · Only Those With Steadfast Belief Act Steadfastly, 2024-04-25)

VII. What Makes a Belief Correct?

A belief that genuinely benefits humanity must arise from philosophy, science, facts, logic, and spiritual sensing. It must simultaneously pass all five tests. Otherwise it is not true belief but merely emergency "clutching at the Buddha's foot" — nihilism or opportunism.

(Xuefeng Corpus · Heart Chapter · Establishing Belief for the Chinese Nation)

VIII. Key Concepts from New Era Human 800 Concepts

A life without belief is a life of contradiction and confusion — a life without direction, without future, and fated for tragedy. (Concept 57)

Whatever belief you hold determines your mental state and psychological activity; that determines your words and actions; that determines your results and the path of your life. Belief is the navigator of human life; different beliefs produce different lives. (Concept 388)

Recognizing the Greatest Creator, revering the Greatest Creator, believing in the Greatest Creator, walking the Greatest Creator's path — these are the prerequisite for awakening human conscience. (Concept 523)

The first of all universal values is belief in the Greatest Creator. This is the cornerstone of all universal values. Belief has nothing to do with religion. (Concept 710)
