Becoming a Sage | Friendly Version¶
Is Sagehood Really That Far Away?¶
Most of us think of sages as distant figures — ancient philosophers, religious founders, legendary heroes. But Guide Xuefeng offers something surprising:
"Very simple. The most direct and simplest way is this: think — how can I help others live better than I do? The moment you think this way and act on it, you are a sage."
That's it. No scriptures to memorize. No teacher to find. No mountain to retreat to.
The only shift required is this: move your central question from "How can I live better than others?" to "How can others live better than I do?" — and then actually live from that question.
What Does a Sage Look Like?¶
You might picture a sage as solemn, silent, impossibly virtuous. But look at how Xuefeng describes the seven real people who graduated from Lifechanyuan University as sages:
"Lively, free, romantic, optimistic — they are like children. They know how to play."
Sages are alive. They're emotionally steady, always praising others, never complaining, never keeping score. They've been holding to their path for over a decade through all kinds of weather — and they're still glowing.
Xuefeng describes the inner landscape of a sage this way:
"A sage delivers light and warmth to the world like the sun, offers beauty like flowers, quietly nourishes like spring rain, and gently fills the air with fragrant blessing like nightbloom."
The Honest Mirror: What Blocks Sagehood¶
Xuefeng offers a clear-eyed diagnostic. Most of us — most of the time — are actually thinking the opposite of sage-thoughts:
"How can I live more comfortably than others?"
This isn't a small difference. Every action motivated by wanting to be better off than others, at others' expense, is moving away from sagehood. Xuefeng points out that this thinking is the root of most crime, corruption, and human suffering.
The path to sagehood begins the moment we honestly notice which question we're living from — and choose differently.
Why Bother?¶
Here's what Xuefeng says is waiting at the end of the sage's path:
"The path of sagehood holds the most beautiful scenery in the world. It is the most intoxicating, enchanting path — the same as the path to becoming celestial and buddha."
And more practically: a sage will never create the kind of karma that pulls them down. A sage is a life of the celestial kingdom.
There's also the destination itself: only by becoming a sage can one enter the Elysium Islands Continent — the highest and most beautiful realm in the life spaces.
You Don't Have to Wait¶
The first step toward sagehood is available right now.
Ask yourself today: How can I help the people around me live better than I do? Then do one thing that comes from that question.
That's the path. Walk it long enough, fully enough, and you arrive.
"May every person in this world become a sage." — Xuefeng, January 24, 2025
